Is it possible to buy a second hand copy of Photoshop?

Legally?

Where?

What about a serial number, which appears to carry forward in upgrades?

Not legally (but justly).

Many sources (I use torrentz.com in conjunction with Vuze).

Serial number is usually attached with the install file as a word document (a README file).

I downloaded version one (CS) 5 or 6 years ago. I downloaded CS2 3 years or so ago, and now I have CS3 and could probably get CS4 if I thought it was necessary.

I bought a used copy of Photoshop Elements 6 for my iMac/Snow Leopard for $50.00. Actually I'm not sure if it was used or new old stock. It works fine. In shopping around, in such places as Amazon or eBay, I noted that old copies of CS 4 or CS3 were still very expensive; perhaps just as expensive as new. Fortunately, in my case, I use Aperture for almost everything and only needed PSE for one or two specific functions.

Thomas Knoll (creator and CEO maybe?) told me in person how to get it for free...

I don't think anyone would care whether you got it from the CEO or from a Google search. If the Daimler Benz CEO tells me how to run a red light and I do it, it's still my problem.

Also good luck getting the CEO to admit that they told you.

I use PS elements and lightroom. Got light room on the educational discount. And have found the main difference in Elements to be that you cannot run actions. As near as I know, the layers/masking is the same.

I have heard the "inside" price, if you work for Adobe, was $40, so get a job with Adobe? I believe it was licensed for three computers, but one died, and I put it on a "new" third computer.

;-)

Professors' price at CSU Bookstore was $200 last year, at that price, I would not worry about the upgrade.

I'm still trying to learn CS, which is straining my old computer, though I am shopping around, not very hard, for a new computer, and will wander to the bookstore to see what they have.

University has a site license for several other programs, unfortunately, not PS.

I might have a copy of PSE7 for windows that came with my scanner laying around my house somewhere... i'll be back home from college by monday and I could check it out. I'd be happy to give it to you as long as you pay shipping. PM me if interested

Thanks, I'll bear it in mind.

I feel unsure right now as to what i really want/need.

Yaron, if you do buy PSE, be sure to register it. Adobe sometimes sends out half-price offers on full-blown Photoshop to registered PSE owners.
