hey there...does anyone know if the shutter is stepless in manual or auto mode? for example, if i stick the speed between 125/60 will i get an 80th? the reason i ask is i just had my canon tested and its over exposing by about half a stop...i was thinking about just compensating by putting the shutter dial half a stop faster....make sense?

What kind of battery are you using? A 1.5 volt alkaline could be putting out too much when it's new and not enough when it's old. It could easily cause a half step error either way.
 
i'm not using a battery...i use my canon in full manual mode....the shutters just seem to be off about half a stop...

for example...if i set it to f2 @60th...it's really firing f2 @40th...i was wondering if it was stepless..because if it were, i figured i could get closer to 60th but setting the speed bw 60/125
 
ah, an important piece of the puzzle was missing.

i can hardly believe you could notice that small of a difference with b&w film.
even in a fully functioning and tuned camera, the speeds could easily be off that much.
b&w film has enough lattitude to cover that.

well...i noticed it when i was shooting indoors in low light...i knew i could stop most action at 1/60th...but the last few rolls i got looked sloppy, like the shutter was running long...likewise, outdoors, my usual setting of f16/250 was coming out with blocked highlights...

since i shoot manual..i know it's not the meter...the aperture is constant, so it had to be the shutter...

sure enough, i had it tested today at the local camera store and it was off by about half a stop...
 
How much did T's charge for the test? I also need the back door on one of my Canonets fixed. It keeps opening by itself, much to my pain and horror....

Your shutter could probably use a cleaning to flush out the old dirt and grease, that would
increase the speeds and probably give you a better exposure but its not off by that much..
 
terry's didn't charge for the test....they have a machine in the back that does it...i could send it out for a CLA but i need it right now...i have my 35/2 and Summitar out for a CLA and am using the canonet as my 35/2 back up....

it isn't off too much i suppose but there is a big enough difference in stopping action between 1/60 and 1/40

anyway...i did a test roll...exposing at somewhere between 2/2.8 and setting the shutter to 125, where i would usually set it to 2.8/60th and it turned out fine...i just have to do a little exposure mathematics with each camera i use
