is the EPL! the Clark Kent of u4/3?

It has a flash, improved image engine and a port for an evf etc. Is it impaired relative to the EP1/2 as far as use of lenses requiring adapters ie Ltm glass?

Good question, FPJ : I've come to the conclusion I need a µ4/3 camera with EVF capability next off, and for me the Olys have it over the Panys due to the inbuilt stabilisation.

So the question is: why would I buy an EP-2 when the E-PL1 is about half the price?
 
Well the price difference isn't that big when you add in the cost of the EVF to the epl-1. I went with the e-p2 because it had been (or still is?) pretty damn difficult to get the EVF separately.

E-P2 has better IS and a stop higher shutter speed too.
 
I don't think Clark Kent--- More Like Robin to Batman.

Top shutter speed of 1/2000th vs 1/4000th, not a big deal. It has a Flash built in. Weaker AA filter...

The bundled EVF is why I bought to EP2, done when Amazon dropped the EP2 Kit to $900.
 
The shutter speed difference didn't matter at all for me. And, I never use flash so again it didn't matter.

I also bought the amazon deal at $899.

EP-2 with evf = $899
EPL-1 = $530 (lower now than when I bought) plus $250 for the evf = $780

Difference = $119, but I save a lot of time and hassle trying to find an evf separately 😀

No regrets about going with the amazon deal

I thought it must be that the EVF was bundled with the 2, but it's not clear in the ads I've seen

The info on IS and shutter speeds is welcome too... as ever, get whatcha pay for!

I think also the construction of the E-PL1 is different -- the body is plastic instead of metal?

I thought about the E-PL1 briefly as well, but determined that I will never use the built-in flash, so I went with the E-P2. The construction of that camera is very solid, and it's very satisfying to finally hold a new camera that's metal and has a bit of weight behind it. Of course, the lens that comes with it (14-42) is real plasticky, but it's of good optical quality.

It would be interesting to do a side-by-side of the E-PL1 and the E-P2.

I went with E-P2 route since the EVF cost added to E-PL1 made the price difference almost non existing here in Finland. Also the waiting time for EVF is quit long one.

Besides E-P2 feels more solid in hand and I don't need flash. Faster shutter speed comes handy when you try to get nice shallow DOF on this camera since you really need fast lense to get that and using fast lens wide open in sunlight at ISO200 requires rather fast shutter speeds. Still it's not fast enough at all situations but it will do just fine 🙂

I also always use legacy glass, I do have the Oly 17mm wich is nice piece of glass but since I dislike AF and the focusing feel of these lenses (all 4/3 and m4/3) is rather horrible to someone coming from Nikon AI / AI-S background I rarely use Oly lens.
 
The EPL1 has the latest processing engine, better images due to weaker AA filter, and more ART filters, the one I like is the Gentle Sepia one.

I'm probably going to get one, when the prices drop, although that NEX is tempting.
 
Clark Kent? Does it become unrecognizable when you put a filter on the lens?? 😉

Na it's your computer that doesn't recognize it...

Car shows, that is.

Took my E-PL1 out with the 14-42 included lens. Vowed to use OOC Jpgs minimal PP. This pic has a smidgeon of sharpening. Vows are meant to be broken... All of them.

Took me back to my 1952 MG-TD, but the TC does have a bit more classic line.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but some serious issues with the redness here, likely due to diffraction.

With u4/3, you probably don't want to stop down beyond f2.8 or 4 when you have deep reds.

I considered the EPL1 but I would have still wanted the Panny 20/1.7 - by the time I'd added that and the EVF I was in the same budget as the GF1. I only use RAW and don't mind PP so OOC JPEGs aren't too much of an issue (wow, too many acronyms!).
 
i have a G1 purchased used as a trial of the m4/3rd system used with m-mount lenses. I was convinced that I liked it enough that it would be a useful companion. I spent quite a bit of time comparing between the GF1, E-P2, E-P1, and E-PL1.

The GF1 was immediately off the list once I got a look through its EVF... it doesn't even come close to that of the G1 I already owned. For those who adapt lenses, the Panasonics are at a distinct disadvantage since they don't have in body image stabilization. For the same reason, the E-P1 was also off the list because it doesn't even have the option. For those who don't care for the EVF, the E-P1 can be had for a very good price these days.

The E-P2 had a better build and feel but I just couldn't get over the effort it took to bring up magnification. The E-PL1 has a dedicated button which makes it much easier. As also mentioned, the E-PL1 has the latest processing and weaker AA filter. Some of the samples on various sites (imaging-resource.com for example) showed a noticeable improvement especially at the corners.

For those reasons, I ended up going with the E-PL1 + EVF. The EVF is very difficult to find separately. I checked with BH, Adorama, and a handful of local camera stores for stock and they were all out. I ended up finding it at a place that most wouldn't think to look... a computer store .. www.microcenter.com. Yes... The E-PL1 + EVF costs about the same as the packaged E-P2 deal.

I've had it for about a week now.. so far I'm pretty happy with it. It did take a bit of effort to determine which settings (including reassignment of buttons) were required to work manual lenses seamlessly then figured out that I can store the settings for later recall. It makes a nice, compact, lightweight, second camera but it is far from perfect. AF for example is slow and tends to hunt.....
