Is the Leica R 35mm f1.4 -any good?

I hear the M 35mm f1.4 pre-ASPH was a bear (difficult) to make, a bit dodgy on quality and unit variation, and finally, not so good a lens.

What about the R version?

I've never used the R lens but I can't agree with you regarding the M version. While it wasn't spectacular like the ASPH models, it certainly doesn't have the reputation you're implying it to have. As far as my knowledge goes the R version was better then the pre-ASPH M but not quite as good as the ASPH.
