I have seen the foam strips you are all referring to intermittently (particularly in the M6) for years - some cameras have it and some do not.
These strips were added in order to facilitate a firm fit for the back plate, not to keep the light out or seal the camera from moisture (or anything else for that matter). At this point, even with an MP, the foam is smashed down so flat it will never go anywhere unless you removed it. And I think I can accurately predict what would happen if you did take it off...
