Is the X10 a bust?

I was interested in the X10 until I read a review that talked about blooming on the image.
Then sure enough, Fiji announced a firmware upgrade which corrected "in part" a white blooming problem. I don't know what "in part" means, but the problem doesn't sound very good. I guess I'll wait until the new Panasonic GX1 comes on the market to see if that is a promising replacement for my GF1. It doesn't look like the X10 deserves any consideration at this point despite the very attractive features. Comments anyone?😕

I think the 'problem' is probably fairly overblown, like most internet-famous problems are.

The main problem with the camera is that it's not an x100! :angel:
Always wondered what the appeal of the x10 over the x100 is...

Price? 😉 Or if you really want more than 35mm in that kind of package. My girlfriend wants a new, compact (but not too small) < $700 camera with a zoom lens. I can't think of a better alternative. Plus, it just looks killer.

I have the X10, and an Olympus E-PL2 micro 4/3 camera. The X10 has a smaller sensor, I believe..than the typical 4/3...which impacts one's ability to "separate" the image of interest from the background with out of focus (bokeh). On the other hand, the X10 has the integrated optical viewfinder, that provides no data, but that I really like and does offer great and fast zoom viewing for the nice zoom lens. On the other hand the Olympus E-PL2 micro 4/3 has an accessory electronic viewfinder, which works well...but i really hate that the viewfinder is a plastic afterthought that sticks up from the top of the camera, is fragile, and does not really "lock" on to the camera. (So, I am selling my Olympus soon, since I got a larger Panasonic Lumix G1...a few years older design and larger than the Olympus E-PL2...but has an integrated viewfinder that provides data, and has the articulated, non-touch screen that I really like..so I can turn it over to protect it from scratches and my nose.)

Anyway...those are my whines and woes. Not worth much, I guess...except just as a few thoughts that I've had back and forth about the cameras.

I owned a Fuji X10, for what it is, its a fantastic little camera that can produce great jpgs direct from camera, it has a few tricks up its sleeve too, I really enjoyed the Shallow DOF function. Leica, however, it is not. The X100 IMHO is a lot better but restricted by a single focal length. I never had any problems with either camera and was very impressed with the results.

I had an X10 and both never saw the white orb problem and if I had don't think I would have been overly concerned about it. There are 'characteristics' about any camera and I think people jumped on the clear and obvious white orb because there wasn't much else to complain about.

The reason I sold it was frustration. The JPEGs it produces are magnificent, but the RAW files have more information and range, something meatier to work with. But I could never get a RAW file to look half as good as an out of camera JPEG. I've never really come across that before in ten years of digital use. The second frustration was the functions of the camera. They were beyond me, so many choices to be made to make the best photograph possible. After three or four variations on the theme with different menu options I lost the will to live and photograph. So eventually just left the camera on Auto and it became a P&S rather than a creative tool. And so it went to a good home.

While the viewfinder was acceptable, the build quality was good, the shutter lag was virtually non-existent, the lens was fast and sharp, the image quality was excellent and the AF was fast and accurate, trying to use it was a study in frustration. Everything on it was in the wrong place for me. I couldn't even turn it on with the lens hood adapter in place.

The X10 looked like it was going to be the perfect carry around camera but it didn't work out for my use.

Agree, the ergonomics were pretty bad.

Wow, I find the X10 to be just about perfect for me, ergonomically. Maybe it's a small hands vs. big hands thing?

Granted, I do have large hands. But even small Canon and Panasonic digicams are easier for me to handle than the X10 was. Some people and some things are some times incompatible no matter what.

By sales it isn't a bust, but its target is not gearheads. I think it is for typical consumers looking for a better camera. The sensor is 1/4 the size of a micro 4/3. It competes with the Leica D lux, Canon G12, etc

I really enjoy using my X10. I find that it has about the same image quality of the GRD III, with less resolution, but much more accurate and pleasant colours.

The way it handles is very enjoyable once I sorted out the settings. I have C1 and C2 as custom black and white jpeg settings, which is fun. Autofocus is fast, as is shot to shot time, although sometimes annoyingly inaccurate, even in bright daylight.

The jpegs are great. I love how they look, although I didn't in the beginning. I was expecting something else. Raws are a bit interesting, though. I agree that the raws are difficult to make look as good as the in-camera jpegs!

As far as the orbs issue goes, it doesn't really bother me. I don't take photos at night with it, so it's not an issue. For that I use my GXR with M or aps-c modules.

I don't own one, but my friends who does have one seems very happy with it. It does look nice physically though, hehe..
