Fuji resolved the 'white orb' issue sometime in early 2012. It was a hardware problem with the sensor. Since then all X10 cameras have shipped with a revised sensor that solves the problem.
I think the revised model is a very nice camera. The exr modes deliver impressive exposure range. I think the worst part is that like all Fuji cameras their RAW format is not supported as good as it should be by programs like Lightroom and Aperture.

Just a fool for rocks
So is this camera worth the $399 price tag? How is the battery life?

from someone who loves the camera, i would not pay more than $399, and now that the x20 was announced for march, maybe $350.

I have taken over 3000 pictures with mine. Battery life (original and 2 3rd party) is generally 250 to 300 shots (no video).
I like the X10 but based on my experience and my preferences I would wait for the X20. After some reviews and a price drop this could be very nice camera.
Startup time and AF are the two things which bother me most on the X10.

I'd have to concur. And I too, love my X10.
