Bob,
I have used a friend's G1 and have been tempted by the current prices on eBay. My friend enthuses about it ad nauseum (he did pay about 900 pounds for the camera and 45mm lens!). My main critisism of the camera is the viewfinder and the focussing which can be off in low light. Also the manual focussing is "not satisfying" when compared to a co-incident rangefinder.
I also have a...
Canon QL 17 III: great for price, sharp lens
Olympus 35RD: great size and handling, suffers from sticky shutter problems
Olympus 35SP: excellent 7 element Zuiko lens (f1.7), spot meter
All three require 1.35V batteries (designed for the original mercury type battery, now obsolete), so metering can be a little difficult using modern 1.5V batteries but there are ways around this.
Finally, please try out an old Leica M series camera such as M6. If the budget will stretch this far, I would recommend one of these.
Kind regards.
