Last time I ordered film (telephone order) with my film vendor I wanted to try what I see being called Fuji Acros 100 ISO b/w film. What I got was Fuji SS 100 ISO b/w film.

Usually in film adverts when the Fuji range of b/w films is listed, there is Neopan 100, 400, 1600.

So where does the Acros fit in, and is it different from SS, and is SS what we would also call Neopan 100? or is Acros. Or are they all names for the same film?

Curious minds want to know.

Is Acros = SS still unclear

I believe that the ss has been replaced by the Acros

Well, that link gives me lots of information on Acros, but still doesn't clear up the original question. Is Acros really SS, or does Acros replace SS or what?

Acros is a replacement emulsion for SS. This is reflected in the price of the two films: SS is $1.99/36exp roll, Acros is $3.69. The full name of Acros is Neopan 100 Acros (at least that's what's written on the cartridge). On Fuji's USA B&W web page (link below), SS is no longer mentioned.

Fuji's B&W film page

And a bit of further info:
Neopan SS was a classical cubic-crystal type emulsion (kinda like FP4+, Plus-X, etc.).
Acros is a modern flat-crystal type emulsion (like Delta 100 or TMax100).
Neopan SS was rarely found in Europe - no wonder, with that name...

Given this info I'm definitely NOT interested in Acros. I shot a few dozen rolls of Neopan SS and liked the results. On the other forum many talk about Acros but rarely SS.

All said and done, I prefer the Ilford classic emulsions.

You might want to try it first, relatively inexpensive way to find out ...

I've used Acros in 35 and 120, and it is really a fine film, tightest grain of all the 100 speed films IMHO. good luck

I believe Megaperls is still selling both in 100 foot rolls.

For a moment there I thought Roman had come back.

I have some SS emulsion left. Some people feel strongly against Acros. I didn't like the "contrasty" look of the Acros emulsion vs. the SS version, but that's just because I was expecting the look of SS.

I don't particularly like TJ-Max or the Delta emulsions myself; the Delta emulsions aren't bad, they're just not my cup of tea. Some people have said that FP4+ and HP5+ are somehow similar to Delta 100 and 400 respectively, but I think they're off their rocker. My vho, of course.

Acros is a beautiful 100 ASA film that a lot of folks rate at 80 ASA.
It is, to me, one of, if not THE best T-grain 100 film around.

That said, if you dislike t-grain, don't bother shooting it 😀

YMMV
