Is there a good hood for the Canonet GIII QL17 ?

Just picked up a great little Canonet GIII QL17. Love that 1.7 lens, very sharp, great ergonomics. But, I noticed that it had a bit of difficulty with a few shots where there is very strong backlighting (granted, what lens doesn't).

Does anyone know of any elegant secrets to putting a hood on this lens? Many thanks in advance.

While it's never a bad idea to put a hood on a lens, I haven't found the Canonet to be particularly flare prone myself.

Yeah mine has huge flare problems. I've been looking for a 48mm screw-in rubber hood or similar but havn't found anything except for in Madsen's Filter Shop. Of course 'camera shops' don't carry stuff like hoods and filters any more. Only the more serious shops do and they don't have 48mm anything. Phew!

Yes, I've had similar difficulties finding 48mm anything. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but I may have to just break out the duct tape 😀

I was in the same predicament. A llocal shop has a couple of very old 48mm filters, but they're not in very great condition. I just bought a 48-49mm step up ring. 49mm filters are quite abundant. I haven't really looked for a hood yet, though.

Well, there are several 48mm hoods on ebay. For instance, #7574575366.

However, they aren't vented. Doing a rough "thumb" estimate, I don't think that hood would block the RF patch.

A standard 48mm hood in metal or plastic will turn up ebay eventually. There is some for sale here Mine are Hoya's.

Or there is always the correct Canon (vented) hoods - model 4 or 5 - but as they are clamp ons, are not as secure as the screw in type, and they sell for premium.

airds is correct, canon has a clamp on hood made for the canonet.
hoya makes a very nice hood in 48mm.
last time i looked, my local camera store still had some collapsible rubber ones in 48. let me know if you'd like me to look.

I use a Canon 50mm S-50 clamp-on hood on mine - I believe the hood is made for an SLR lens. I think its a better hood than the one designed for the QL-17 which is made of plastic and somewhat flimsy IMHO.
