Is this a good deal on an M6?

I get the camera and lens in a few hours. I am going to shoot a few rolls of Kodachrome right away on a special gig. I am 90% sure I am going to get a Aspheric for what I need this camera and lens to do.

I have been using an FM3A with a sharp as heck 28mm 2.8 AIS lens, the Leica has it's work cut out for it...🙂.

By the way, I LOVE my Hasselblad XPan! I have all three lenses and they are incredible so I am really looking forward to the battery free / fast lens Leica.

The M6 is the Leica camera to get, in my opinion. I will follow my own advice, and one day soon I will buy a nice M6.

I think

I think

the MP is the one to get. I own an M7 and LOVE It but if I could go back I would of bought a black MP or MP3. Just personal preference I guess, but I handled a new MP and it was so nice.

Raid and Steve, I agree with both of you!

KM-25, keep us updated when the camera comes in and you've run a few rolls through it.

I have had my M6 Wetzlar since Friday, I put 4 rolls of Kodachrome 64 and one 200 in it since then. When I got home today, the Fed_X man had put the new 35 in the storage and locked it up as I had asked. I already like the hood on the new 35 Aspheric better than the 2nd generation one, less VF obstruction, less obvious.

Sunday, I shot the old 35 from F 2.8-9.0 on street performers and granola heads in Boulder as my GF and I walked around and enjoyed the weekend.

I know since low light and wide open are *Key* reasons for me to have bought the M6, the 2nd generation 35 Summicron will go up for sale soon. The Aspheric is like brand new, will be a killer lens, might be the only one I get for awhile until I get a 50 1.4 Aspheric down the road.

The camera is marvelous. I have shot professionally for 16 years, 30 years total with a camera and have never had an experience quite like this. My XPan is close, but so much slower speed glass, especially my 30 5.6.

Two questions: what does CLA'd mean?

What is the lever to on the opposite side of the lens mount button do?

I'll send the Kodachrome off to Dwayne's tomorrow....the light is getting great right now so I want to go out and play.

CLA = clean, lube, and adjust.

I assume that the lever of which you write is the frameline preview lever.

Preview the framelines without mounting the corresponding lens :
  • outer is 35 + 135 mm
  • middle is 50 + 75 mm
  • inner is 28 + 90 mm

Enjoy your new toy - er, sorry, tool! 😉

Personal preference it is. I had made my mind up that I wanted an M7 but still went to my local store to try an MP on Leica day. I gave it a good tryout but was underwhelmed by the MP, got the M7 and never looked back. 😉

Magus,
what is the the MP going to give you that the M6 doesn't? Besides the RF patch flare (which is less of a problem than is reported, and can be fixed), and ergonomics similar to the M3, they seem to be very similar.

if you have any inclination at all to get the m8 someday, the preferred mechanical leica is the m6 ttl. if you're a not too staunch traditionalist, the black paint mp is the ticket.

I have been wondering about M6 prices as well😉
Keh is selling them from $1200-$1500, they are selling Titaniums for under $2000!

But checking completed ebay listings, I see them going as low as $860!!

The M6 is the second highest production Leica ever according to Stephen Gandy's cameraquest there were over 132000 original Leica M6s produced, read more here:

I think with the coming of the M8, you will see more M6s hitting the used camera market and prices going down a little more, may be $600-$700??...Heck if they go for $500, I'll buy one😉

At that price, I'd buy another one too!

Just a comment on some of the previous comments on the MP & M6 & M7. I've handled the M7, and they are nice, but I would not trade my M6 classic for an M7.

Just so that you know it's not just that "mechanical vs. electronic" thing, I'm not a fan of the M4-2 or M4-P either. It is most certainly a matter of taste. I like the M2 much better than the M3, but all things considered, I'd rather stick with the M3 (unless I change my mind again).

I think that's why it's a good thing there are so many variations. None to somebody who doesn't care for them, but enough for those who do.
