Is this M6 really a rare kind?

"... by Leica collector standards, worth a bit more than the "normal" two moniker version..."

I expect that means that it can well be non-functional.

The M6 with the large M6 on the front was an attempt from Leica to see where gray-market cameras came from. By making a "European" version with this on it and the rest of the world got the Leica M6 engraving. There are fewer of the M6 only made, but as a collectible it is not a outstanding one. I would not pay anymore for it and you can pick them up in Europe for the same price as the "regular' engraving.

I can confirm that, in Europe at least, these really aren't very rare and don't command any price premium over the "Leica M6" branded models. Personally, I kinda like these big "M6" models, but beauty's in the eye of the beholder.

I would guess that many, many more of these were made than the M6 classics with the .85x finder (~3,100 of those), and they don't really seem to command much/any premium over a .72x, so I wouldn't want to pay anything extra for one of these.

Some people determine rarity by how many screws were used in assembly.

...or how many screws are loose in the buyer...

But seriously, the 'BIG-M' M6 is a bit 'rare' but not really 'collector' quality. But if you find one in good working order and are thinking minimum trademark stuff on the front it may tip the scales in its favor.
