I just found out this past weekend what I would imagine every other R-D1 user knows except for me, i.e. memory cards over 2 GB won't work.
I went up to Leavenworth, WA for the Christmas festival and borrowed a friend's 16 GB SD card and got the message "SD Card Error". When another friend let me borrow their 8 GB card and it, too, wouldn't work, I began to suspect what the problem was.
After reading a couple of posts on this forum, I now realize I can't use a card larger than a 2 GB SD card. My question is, will the following memory cards sold at COSTCO work in my R-D1?

Thanks.

Link doesnt work, but honestly I recommend you buy a proven reliable SanDisk Ultra II (or III) 2gb. my 0.02
Maybe someone can clarify, but is the R-D1 capable of matching the write speeds of the Ultra III (or is it pointless to spend any more when the UII is fast enough?).

Sorry about posting that link!
Basically, COSTCO is selling four 2 GB Class 6 SD Cards for $19.99.
The ad says they are waterproof, dust-proof, ESD-proof and that they are high speed, i.e. 21MB per second transfer rate.
I don't know what "Class 6" means or if Class 6 cards will work. I also don't know if the speed of the card will prevent it from working in the R-D1.
Is it possible to know in advance if the card will work in the R-D1?
Thanks.

the rd1 cannot match the speed of the card...but it does make a difference when transferring files to your computer.

Do look into those disks and any reviews. I can't but help to analogize my memory card to my film. All cards have some probability of failing, but I just see minimizing the risk here if one card is just more proven. Anyway, i'm sure those will work fine just something to think about.
Class 2, 6, 10 etc indicate the speed of the card, approximately, and shouldn't affect the read/write ability of the card.
I suspect the card size issue is the original SD type versus the later SDHC. The SD has up to 2GB capacity, though through some trickery some were offered in 4Gb size.
Original SD card readers and cameras made for SD cards could not use the SDHC cards when they came out, offering 4Gb and larger. For instance the Leica M8 was made compatible with SDHC though a firmware update, and I suppose the R-D1 might have that same limit.
FWIW, Ellen, Leavenworth is just north over the hill from me... I should go up there too and see how they've decorated for Christmas.

Yes, you should definitely check it out. Six of us in our photo group drove up from Portland and stayed in two different B&B places. We had a lot of fun taking pictures, eating and drinking
One of the gals in our group was using a star filter with her DSLR. As for myself, I took my M6 and my RD-1. I tried out some Fuji color print film rated ISO 1600 that is only sold in Japan that my nephew brought back for me. The results weren't too shabby considering the high ISO.
