Is this site under attack?

Perhaps the site performance could be improved by replacing the database (mySQL?) with an LDAP repository, which has considerably faster read access than the former.

Wooooo....oooooo I am the ghost of the long lost pristine Bessa R3A.... I have placed a curse upon this site and all it's users. You are hereby warned.... Stay Away!!!!! I received this in an email that mysteriously dissolved 15 seconds after I read it.

Isn't LDAP a directory service?

Yep, I have seen some innovative uses for LDAP but I have never seen it used for a threaded discussion group.

MySQL is a very fast and capable database. It should be able to handle the load of a site with this kind of traffic.

Person or persons who should remain unnamed, since it is a theoretical allegation only. But ever since a member was banned, things have been extraordinarily slow, access been difficult. This is the first time I've actually gotten into the forum and been able to open a thread all day, and I've been trying for 3 hours.
It is all circumstantial, but still...

Wow! Someone was banned? What does one have to do to get banned? I've always found everyone to be quite enjoyable. I guess I missed something...

Russ... where have you been, mate? An Apollo mission? Iditarod?
The short answer is that you will be banned for foul and abusive language directed toward another member, as it should be.

I might point out, at this time (23:03 CST) the site is running at its former lightning pace.

if I remember correctly RFF had a lot of similar problems last time Jorge went thru some of these changes. My reluctant conclusion it this is related to the "improvements" in the site.

It's far more likely that there is another application/database being hosted on the same server which is dragging down this site's performance than "hostile action" being directed against the site. We have this problem with the shared web application infrastructure where I work... if one application tanks it can take one or two others with it.

I don't know, Jan. Never has this site been so slow. I don't know of ANY site that is this slow, at times. Sometimes it's like 1994, click on a link, and go make coffee, when you return your page may have loaded.
It's operating at normal speed tonight, but that's the first in days, mon ami.

Usually companies stick all of their users and user groups into LDAP. This is because it is lightning fast on reads but somewhat slow on writes. And users hardly ever change their authentication data.

3 years ago I configured several ldap classes with attributes to store threaded forum discussions. Accessing the data via JNDI was simple and the results were incredibly fast

Hierarchical storage access is usually much faster than that of relational models with their complex joins.

Try it out sometime...you'll be amazed by the speed.

Is this site under attack?

No. But a lot of it's members seem to be running around like headless chickens desperate to find a conspiracy theory.

George has repeatedly stated that these are server problems. You know George? The site owner? The guy who actually knows whats going on?

You mean Jorge?

Well, what ever the problem was with the site it appears to be running fine now - just in time too, I was beginning to get withdrawal symptoms........

HOWEVER, it did force me to go out and take some shots on a blustery and wet morning yesterday. (One of the rare days that I am off work) 🙂

I haven't noticed any server problems except for the site being down a few times.

The site seems to slow down and Jorge moves to another server quite frequently.

New members are joining and uploading, but not that many. I can recall about three server upgrades in the past few months.
