Is this the King of Bokeh?

Wow, nothing like a little Bokeh discussion to get the juices flowing! Lots of good examples here. Some from lenses you'd expect, like the Summarit 50/1.5 (wish I could afford one!), and some from great low end or "hybrid" lenses. Certainly the Summicron 35 holds little claim to the "King of Bokeh" title. And I'm still blown away by the examples from the ZM Sonnar C 50/1.5 like those here:

Many nice photos on that site, but one with some trees in a background also gives rather unpleasant bokeh, IMO.

Stunning photos Vince. As always. I tend to see bokeh as the dreamy swirls that help separate back, foreground and midground. Keeps the image painterly in my mind.

here's a few of mine using the 50/1.0@ 1.0 and 50/1.4 (pre lux) @F2, and 50/1.4 ASPH @1.4. Not displayed in the order of lenses i listed.🙂

Don't know which lens is used for which photo, but first and second are my favorite.

I just reciently purchased a 90/2.8 Fat tele-elmarit. I did a test today, and I have to say, I love the bokeh.

the first tree shot is remarkable in terms of the composition...it conveys so much mystery.

The thin T-E ain't too shabby either. This shot was taken wide open at closest focus.

Thanks for the kind words Magus, Krosya and thomasw 🙂

The first is with the 50/1.4 ASPH (E43 version)
two and three are the 50/1.4 pre ASPH (E43 version)
Shots four and five are with the Noctilux .

I looked at your website - and WOW - some great photos there. Looks like you have traveled a lot and managed to capture the spirit of those places.
Superb work! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Krosya thanks - my domain site is in the slow process of updating but my more recent documentary work (shot mainly with the 50/1.4 and 35/1.4 pre ASPH's) can be seen here:

Sunlight through trees...

Sunlight through trees...

...is always tough. I've never shown this picture to anyone because it was one of those "nice ideas in my head" that didn't work AND Walgreen's detroyed the film which was my first roll with this lens. I purposely left the lines from the processor in to show all of the out of focus area. I don't remember the f-stop. Somewhere between 2.0 and 5.6. Probably closer to 5.6 than 2.0. That leaves either 2.8 or 4.0, eh! Minimum focus distance.

What we have here is a bad photograph, terrible processing and worse scanning. I am sharing it for you all to guage, evaluate, condone or condem the out of focus areas.

Okay, now the images are coming up to par...

But, I respectfully disagree that any Nikkor lenses do not create great bokeh...one only has to visit the thread I posted above...

YMMV...but I am quite happy with certain Nikkors...
