I know Panasonic is supposed to introduce a 25mm f1.4 lens for the Lumix G1, but I have't seen anything about it. Is this it, from Matsuiyastore on eBay?

Edit: Some of the descriptions say this lens was designed by Leica. It's called a "Summilux". Wow, this is soooo hot!

No, sorry. Looks like it is for the Leica Digilux 3. Can be used on the G1 as well though.

That lens seems to be in great demand - and no wonder it looks great in terms of its specs and actual performance. I have been following it closely on eBay as I have a Pany L1 and would dearly love the lens for portraiture etc. But there is no sign yet of its price slipping although I thought this was bound to happen now its been around for a couple of years. Lovely bit of kit.

(Lots of other reviews on the web, too)

Its a 4/3rds lens, not a micro 4/3rds lens. It's been out for awhile now.

And a fine lens it is. I have one. I use it on my Leica Digilux 3 and also, with an adapter, on my Panasonic G1.

On the G1 the focus is a little noisy but works well.

A lens deserving of the Summilux brand, I assure you.

The one you're thinking of is the pana 20mm f1.7, that one you linked to is an old 4/3rds lens which is a brilliant lens.

Has anyone heard anything about the 20mm f1.7? I note that very few of the Pany m4/3rds lenses make it over here. I have the long telephoto, 45mm-200mm, but I had to buy it from a seller on eBay. I've never seen it for sale in the US.

The 20mm 1.7 lens seems to have gone MBA (missing before action) and I hope they come out with it real soon because they are really dragging their heals on the lens selection for the G1 and GH1 cameras. Mostly for me though I want to get my hands on that 20mm lens so I can use it on that Olympus EP1 camera thing as the proposed 17mm f2.8 lens does not cut the butter for me.

I'm thinking about this, too, especially because I have a G1 and also will want the Olympus. (I knew that when I bought the G1; I just did not want to wait and figured I usually shoot with two bodies anyway.)

Is an extra stop--to 1.7--really all that crucial? Usually I think so because I want faster speeds, but of course a lens has to be really, really good to be good wide open. I was a long time Pen F and OM owner, and as much as I loved them I did not think their fast lenses were all that great. (The 50mm f/1.4 Zuiko I had was really pretty bad wide open.)

So, maybe we should get get the pancake AND the 20mm f/1.7.

I'll be getting both.

Though as much as I hate to admit it, the Panasonic, if as good as lenses like their 25mm f1.4, or even close to being as good, will be an absolute killer of a lens. Especially at that pancake size.

Can you use the 4/3rds lenses on a micro-4/3rds body and retain auto-focus and IS?

You retain IS on any lens you can think to put on it, even something like the 12mm heliar Voigtlander if you want!

The AF depends on the lens firmware being updated to enable it to AF via adapter to the m/43rds mount. There are some that can already do it like the kit lenses and the 9-18mm (which is small enough to actually be useful!), but they will have to update others.

Theoretically, all lenses should be able to.

Question. You say it is noisy when on the G1. Is it noisy on 4/3 cameras? And in noisy do you mean like you can hear it moving or old school nikon focus screw noisy?

It makes a whirring sound. You would not want to shoot in a theater with it. No, the lens is much quieter on my Leica Digilux 3, which is a 4/3 camera. It's a matter of which autofocus technologies on the camera will work with the lens.

You could always put it in manual mode if you needed quiet, though. In manual mode, it automatically causes the electronic viewfinder to magnify the image when you touch the focus ring. A great feature! (A feature available with some but not all adapted 4/3 lenses, so you need to read the support information on the web carefully.)

The Panasonic/Leica 25mm f/1.4 gives beautiful images. However, it's a physically very big lens with 10 elements. I would expect the 20mm f/1.7 to be less of a performer and more worthwhile because it will get into dark places, will be more compact, and will have quieter autofocusing.
