Ok, slightly OT.

Got an old Rolleiflex that needs a CLA before I can put to use. Contacted Paul Ebel and he will do the job in two weeks. That's good. But money is required.

Also got an old but fully working Rolleicord Va with the same lens. I suppose I can just use it but I really, really hate that side way shutter trigger thing. I don't mind anything else with that camera, not even the extra step to cock the shutter. But that side way trigger always made me feel that I shake the camera.

I also got a fully working Yashicamat 124G.

All three cameras are cosmetically beaten up but no defect.

None of them will become my main tool on the street. But I like the thought of having something for square format. I always want a mamiya 6 but I can't afford it at the moment.

So I am thinking to go with the CLA on the 'flex and sell my 'cord and possibly 124G. But for the CLA job, I think 'cord alone will take care of it. 124G might also take care of a newer focus screen if I so decide. BTW, can any of you convince me that a newer designed screen will actually take care of the lousy focusing problem I am having with all these cameras?

Or should I just keep the 'flex on the shelf for decoration and use what I have?

Just come here to have my reality checked.

I'd suggest you look into Maxwell HiLux screens for these cameras. The difference they make is dramatic. Many people say it's like having a new camera. No Web site (the one Matt Clara set up seems to be in disarray) but you can contact Bill Maxwell directly:

Not cheap but ask about "seconds". Bill normally sells only perfect screens but if you ask he might have ones with slight imperfections available for Those In The Know.

(And be prepared for a long conversation. Bill's an expert on most aspects
of photography, and he loves to talk. I don't mind -- he's one of my favorite people in the business.)

I just had my Flex 2.8f CLA'd by http://www.krimarphoto.com/

I was lucky enough to be within driving distance of this great little camera shop and it's wonderful owner Krikor.

As soon as he picked up my Flex I knew it was in good hands, you could just tell that he's been working with Rollei's for many years, it was a sight to see.

He let me see the difference between the stock screen and a Maxwell and it was like night and day, literally. The Maxwell was so much brighter and the prizms made it much easier to focus, I was sold and had him replace the screen along with the cla.

If it was me I'd get the Flex cla'd and go take some pics 🙂

Have you tried fixing a cable release to the camera in a semi-permanent arrangement, ie with duct tape? I do this with my Agfa Isolette I, which is my choice for 6x6.

Andy, I thought about that but not sure if I like a cable dangling on the side of the camera. Do they make something as small as a softie, the thign you just screw on the spot?

Yes, but I can't dredge the name of it out of the cobwebs of my memory . . . had a couple years ago . . . seem to recall using them on my long gone 2.8 'E's. They really did make a difference.

Welllllll, that was over 25 years ago so I wouldn't want you trying to chase down what I used back when I was a child. 😀

Actually, I think Tom Abrahamsson's MiniSoft Release will work. They're used on a variety of cameras that have cable release threads in the shutter button. I'm sure Rich at Photo Village (an RFF sponsor) has them and he can probably tell you for sure if they fit.
