Hi,

I've been playing with my new Plustek 8200i and Silverfast. I've been able to get some pretty nice scan of my negatives, but the iSRD functionality of Silverfast really has me flummoxed (which is irritating as I spent extra money to get this functionality as I thought it would be useful).

Basically running an iSRD scan works as it should. However, most of the time the iSRD completely corrupts the final image, producing something akin to a stained-glass window. Looking at Silverfast's interpretation of the IR-scan, it appears to mark defects across the whole of the image - so the corruption isn't surprising. On a very (very) few occassions I've been able to get the iSRD function to do something vaguely sensible and mark a few of the defects, although its automatic correction leaves a lot to be desired and the actual detection doesn't appear to be significantly affected by any of the controls on the iSRD panel.

I've tried a fair few negatives now - all of them C41-process so I'm fairly certain there's nothing unusual about them.

I've also tried the trial version of VueScan - that doesn't seem to suffer the same issues as Silverfast with it's IR scans, but I'd really prefer not to have to pay for a new bit of software when the bundled one is meant to work.

Does anyone else have success with iSRD on a Plustek scanner? If so, are there any tricks or tweaks?

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Daniel

You're wrong V-12, iSRD works on all C-41 films. It doesn't work on classic B&W, but on all C-41.

Are your negatives clean?

Hi,

The negatives are all C41-process - I know that iSRD doesn't work with classic B+W film because of the silver.

The negatives are (miraculously) very clean although there are certainly some defects (scratches) present that I was expecting iSRD to take care of. I was wondering whether Silverfast needed more of a defect in order to set the thresholds for the IR-scan correctly?

Cheers,

Daniel

I think the scanner is actually the same as the 7600 internally. It just ships with somewhat newer software for 64-bit operating systems.

I've only used mine for a few rolls of color film. I gave up on iSRD for the time being because I don't use color often, it took a long time when I tried it, and yet I had similar results (completely unusable, oddly colored images). Like a few of the other Silverfast features, I got better scans when I turned it off.

Are you using iSRD in automatic or in manual mode? Have you tried the manual mode to fine tune the "sensitivity" of iSRD in the options menu? Have you by chance activated "SRD" (classic) additionally to iSRD in the options menu? Maybe you could post some example pictures to illustrate the problem? Also, the Silverfast handbook provides detailed instructions on the correct use of the scratch and dust removal tools.

Hi,

I'm really grateful to those people who've taken some time to try and assist me.

I've attached a screen shot of Silverfast scanning one of my negatives (a cheap Kodak Ultramax film, if that matters). The little navigator window shows that the basic scan is running OK. The main window shows the result of the iSRD correction, which is complete gibberish.

Effectively Silverfast is telling me that the entire image is one large 'defect'. However, it does that irrespective of the settings used for the iSRD scan (as far as I can see there are only two iSRD settings in Silverfast 8 - so I'm not sure what else I can fiddle with).

As always, any additional assistance will be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Daniel

Hi Daniel, Mark from Plustek here. That certainly is an odd looking image. Let me ask the guys at SilverFast what they think is going on here.
