Well-known
Well, over the last year I've been mainly using my Mamiya 7ii for work and my M7 and M4P have been sitting safe in a bag unused. The other day I took the Mamiya in to get fixed as the rangefinder was sticking (actually, in the year I've had it I've had to get it serviced three times! Loose knobs, RF alignment issues etc.) Anyway, because I go everywhere with a camera i dug out my M7 and 50mm and hit the street to try re-familiarize myself with it. Of course, the initial reaction when picking up a Leica after time away from it is that it's a real solid, well made machine. Aside from the fact I now find it hard to compose in 3x2 format, it was a real joy to use. I especially enjoyed an extra two stops to play with in low light. But I do have a gripe. I really got annoyed with how the rangefinder is so cluttered compared to the Mamiya and how two sets of frame lines a shown at a time. Even more annoying to me is how with the 50mm frame lines, the bottom line in incomplete to almost non existent - just two little indicators at either end of the "box." My M4P has complete lines so I'm assuming that the M7 has to have a gap because the light meter LED lights are located there in the viewfinder. Not a massive deal, but seeing as I'm used to the Mamiya's complete box it's a bit off putting. I used to LOVE my old M3's chunky bright lines. I wish I still had it!
I've heard that you can get the framelines of a M customized. Does this mean that someone could effectively put the missing bottom line in for me? I'm sure I used a friends M7 a while ago that had different looking frame lines. Does anyone out there have a stock M7 with complete 50mm lines?
Be cool!
