Congrats Joe. It's a great camera and the best purchase that I ever made.

Yes, a good solid grip is helpful. I have one of those machined aluminum grips. It adds a bit of mass to the body, which I think helps absorb some of the shutter slap. Works well with a wrist strap or with a cross-body carry strap attached only to the left-hand lug.

The grip pictured at the above link will block the battery compartment. The one I have looks very much like that, but the base plate is shorter, with a U-shaped end, to clear the batter door.

I like a few others back in 2006 bought Photoequip Corp's FM grip (http://www.photoequip.net/_forms/fm-grip.htm )and customized it for the RD1. Mine is a pleasure to use. I covered the grip (i.e. not the platform) in leather and use it. Here are the original images of the grip when it was new.
