Around the home territories, I don't carry a bag. Traveling, yes, 'cause I often don't know where I'm going to be from one hour to the next.

Nice website you have there Joe...
As for bags, I have 4 or 5, none of which are perfect, but my Lowepro Nova 2 can carry a CL and an extra lens, plus my digital P&S. My larger Nova can carry to SLRs and some extra lenses, and my Tenba messenger can carry a few cameras and a laptop. Which one I grap depends on where I'm going...

I just returned from another two weeks in Cuba. Same ritual every day, I would leave for the day to walk 8-10 hours with just a 35mm RF and one lens in my hand with 6-7 rolls of film and spare battery in a pocket. I could not imagine schlepping a bag or multiple lenses all that time.
19 of the 20 photos on my website http://bobmichaels.org were shot with the same lens, a 28mm. Can anyone pick out which image was not shot with the 28mm?
I could not tell which one was with a 28, but, your image are outstanding. I too like the 28 and 35 most of the time. I am new at this street photography, but, I tend to carry the 28 and 35 and some film.

Looping back to Joe's original post, I found these shots by walking 8-10 hours a day. I could not have done that carrying a bag with extra gear.
I find that time invested in shooting pays off much better for me than equipment options. Less weight carried means better stamina, more time on foot to find the right things to shoot.
when asked what i do for a living i often say "walk and wait".
i rarely carry a bag myself. camera in hand, 1 lens and off i go.

The last day I was in Cuba, I walked for 3-4 hours and knew I had nothing to show for it. Then I walked by this and made it worthwhile.

Then I walked for another 4 hours finding nothing. I was hot, tired, my feet were beginning to hurt, and I really wanted to get back to where I could find some cold water or a cold beer. Finally I spied an empty bicycle taxi in front of a really ratty looking building. I went in to see if I could find the owner and have him give me a ride back. I did find the owner and 20 minutes later shot this one.

So this was what I got for walking for 8 hours. It might not be worth it to everyone but it was to me.

@Bob
Two more great images
Well worth the beer, I'm sure you had at the end of the long day....

We're all light!
Bob: Flat-out great work. Worth the effort to my eyes!
When I put together the system I've been using for the past eight years (pair of Hexar RFs, three lenses, one or two flash units, spare set of batteries, pocket tripod, pen, pad, Sharpie, business cards, and, of course, film), I made a conscious decision to have a kit that could fit (comfortably) inside a Domke F803. This way, the bag is never unpacked; the gear resides in the bag, ready for whatever...just drop some film in one of the pouches, check batteries, and go. Easier to carry than any setup I've had in the past. I no longer think about what to bring and what to leave home, with one exception: when I'm only wandering a short ways from home, I just grab the Contax Tvs and a spare roll or two of film. Easy, either way.
