I recently made, yet again, a conscience decision to not buy any more cameras...I am happy with all I have and I have plenty to shoot with when the mood strikes...
I also had the thought that I've never owned a Canon camera of any kind...
I have had Pentax, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus (RF's never a SLR), Mamiya, Yashicamat and a few odds & ends...but never a Canon...

Well, I can't say that any more...a friend's dad asked her if she could use his old camera she said not really but I know of someone who would put it to good use...she hand carried it home from Arkansas and gave it to me last night...
It's a Canon A-1 in near new condition...only one rub mark by the Rewind side strap lug and the Memo Box has a small scratch in it...other than that it hasn't a mark on it...even the bottom looks like it's never touched anything harsh...

I just bought a new battery for it and loaded with some home-rolled APX 100...

Never say never...😀

N_S--you now have a challenge on your hands!
The A-1 is at once at fabulously built and unnecessarily complicated camera. Almost the engineer's free reign.
I really like the one I have, and it takes SOME getting used to!
Good luck....

An A-1 is a beautiful Canon...enjoy the gift.🙂

Thanks, I will...I've never used Canon lenses so wanting to see what comes out of this...I do like the what I'm seeing in the viewfinder...I plan on using it in Manual mode or Aperture Priority for now...
In another thread I posted that I want to shoot some Velvia 50 that I've had for some time now and develop it too...This might be the camera that I use for that project...😎

The 50 / 1.4 is beautiful... beautiful in a way that Nikon 50s are not generally (possible exception for the 50/2). CLoser to the Takumar I'd say.

I just sold an FD lens that I would HIGHLY recommend to you -- the FD Macro 80-200mm f/4 L -- it must be the "L" version. I needed the money desperately but boy was I sad when this was snapped up on Day 1 as a BIN listing on eHarbour. It's really stunning.

Other recommendations: 35/2, especially early "concave" version. the 100mm f2 is famed; the f/2.8 also superb. The 17mm and 20mm FD lenses I tried didn't impress me; but one hears great things about the 24mm and the 28mm f/2.

Anyway enjoy the A-1. It's a great camera.
