J12 on M bodies

I got my first J12 yesterday from a fellow rff'er. It's in great shape, but the rear lens goes way way back. I read on the dantestella site that it works on the hexar rf, but metering is slightly affected. Anyone use one of these on an M4P? How close does it get to the shutter?

Why is the back element designed to unscrew so easily, can you take photos with the back element removed? Anyone have links to J12 galleries?

It unscrews as it had to be assembled somehow 😉

You can remove it for cleaning, but I doubt you'll get anything but blur if you try taking photo's with it removed

It just seems so user friendly to unscrew, makes sense I guess. If I had an RD-1 or M8, I'd test it without back lens immediately, but with film in there, I'll trust you Ash 😉

Does anyone make a deep M lens back cover for say the J12 with an M adapter on it? I think I will like this lens, but will need something to protect that big alien eyeball at the rear or the lens, while keeping an M adapter attached on it.

Having just searched the bay, Heavystar has a deep rear m cap, based I think on the super angulon 21 rear cap.

I don't know for sure it'll fit, but might get 1 myself, the original Leitz version seems to fetch more than a J-12!

This is exactly what I'm looking for, just ordered one.

Also you can make a rear cap using a plastic film canister with a bit of duct tape liner to get it to fit just right.

Thanks all, yes it does seem that a cover for the element can be easily made from a film canister, but while that would protect the element, it wouldn't secure like a real M twist on back.

Great photo leica M2 fan, I know those buildings!

Nick - great J12 photos, but the one that really caught my eye in your gallery is the "hidden treasure" photo, how did you do that? Seems like more dynamic range in that photo, than is usually available??

Thanks for the compliment! The only thing I did with that photo besides adjust levels and curves is turn up the saturation level a bit in PS CS. That kodak slide film really pops when seen through a loupe and I tried to reflect that in the web image.
