Does any one have both lenses and compared the results? A J12 costs about $40, a Biogon much more. Is it worth it in terms of image quality difference?

I've just got the J12 (several) and they are very sharp. I thought the J12 was supposed to be an exact copy of the Biogon. They sure look alike!

When I saw the thread heading I thought that's quite a dramatic confrontation -- of an old Soviet lens and a modern German/Japanese one... And I do have both the J-12 and a 35 Biogon ZM. I have not compared these, but now I expect you were referring to the Jupiter's Contax lens relative... and I don't have that one.

Yes, I meant the lenses to fit Kiev/Contax.
I have 2 Contax IIa cameras coming back from repair. I have several different 50mm lenses for them, a J9, and a J12. But the J12 doesn't fit on the post-war Contaxes, so I'd like a Biogon, a Nikon, or a CV 35 lens for them. In the meantime, I can use the J12 on a Nikon S RF.
I'm really done, this is just tweaking. 🙂

I think there was a pre war Biogon and a post war Biogon, only the latter fitting the IIa and IIIa series.
The FSU could copy and manufacture lens, they only attempted the prewar. The coated lens should be better, aside from build standard, e.g. many of the FSU lens do not have adequate peripheral blackening.
But the cost is less...
