J3 & Need for Adjustments?

Hi,

I'm hoping that Brian V. Sweeney and others who really know the Jupiters, will pick up on this. If the J3 m39 was designed for early Leicas and Russian copies, how is it that this lens need modification, or "collimation" as Brian calls it, to focus properly?

No, I'm not in the market for a J3 at this moment, and yes, it is a question that Ruben and I have batted around.
