Masters of Jazz: Unseen Portraits

Photographs by Jamie Hodgson

Previously unpublished black and white photographs taken in and around London in the 1950s and 60s. They feature Louis Armstrong and many other jazz greats including Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton and Jimmy Rushing, most during live performances, and convey the immediacy and spontaneity of the jazz movement.

Photographer of jazz greats dies
Photographer Jamie Hodgson, who took haunting black and white pictures of jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, has died, it was announced.

The 76-year-old lost his battle with cancer on Sunday.

But before he died, Hodgson fulfilled a dream of displaying his unseen images of Ella, Louis and Duke Ellington at the National Theatre in central London.

Just passing this along for those who might be interested in seeing some great B&W work of some Jazz legends and maybe hoist a pint to a great photographer to took some of the most remembered and iconic B&W available-light images of US Jazz performers that have ever been displayed.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks
