I just booked my mid winter break and will be on vacation from work in January to avoid the cold.

It seems like January 11th is already the date that has been set and arranged. I know that Jean Marc recently went shooting (cameras) in Africa, and by then I should have at least my 8x10 proofs from Digital Silver Imaging as I am starting to build out my portfolio after creating a "Calzone Disaster" by shooting for over seven years without any reguard to printing.

It will be most interesting to share the free zoomed in crop of a 40 inch print to see the IQ of my Monochrom. During my "Vacation" I intend on learning how to print using Piezography. BTW the 27 inch Eizo indicates that 24x36 inch prints with good files seems practical when I zoom in to peep. Hopefully I will have some prints that I made.

Anyways this seems likely the last Meet-Up at Puck Fair before it closes, so I hope to see everyone there. I also need to keep the Camera Beauty Contest going and will start the thread shortly for the February Meet-Up.

wish i could be there for the last meet at the puck...

Joe,

When are you coming home (meaning New York)?

Met so many people at these New York Meet-Ups, and Puck Fair has been a big part of what now is almost an urban legend. November 2015 will begin the 7th year of the New York Meet-Ups that originally was started by Damaso. This February will be the 6th Annual Camera Beauty Pagent/Gearfest/ Camera Parade where we make fun of ourselves and camera obsession and culture.

Already there has been talk of getting a new location.

For five years I was the organizer, but for health and other reasons I decided to move on and have been absent. I do miss my friends and all the crazy people (good crazy like smart and with personality).

Anyways I want to make this a tribute to Puck Fair.

Cal

Sad to hear that place is closing! Enjoy one for me!

Damaso,

Thanks for starting the legacy.

Originally I kinda resented that you dumped the responsibility onto me. Why did you choose me?

Back then, I was pretty clear that I was and still am a lazy slacker who otherwise would not want to be bothered. LOL.

John hows that light bulb book coming along? Wish I could make it to this one. I will be on vacation all of January

no money, no plans for travel...i need a new computer...life keeps gettin' in the way!

Cool, we need some new gear on display at the meet-up...and some new photography. Bring that IIIg Cal if you get a chance.

Joe,

Yesterday somehow I negociated a two year lease with only a hundred dollar increase in rent. For a little more than three years my rent was the same, and I still have a good deal. Had to be smart, prepared, and aggressive, but I kinda mugged my landlord. I kinda offered him no choice. Some times you just gotta be a tough guy.

Keep fighting and let me know when things improve and you can get down here.

John,

You will see your influence because this three lens kit is mighty small. All very cool glass. The biigest lens is the 35/1.8 Nikkor in LTM.

I found that the knob for the slow speeds makes a great grip. Also returned the LTM Leicavit. I kinda like the IIIG as a small petite rig.

There is a killer surprise in the external VF'er though that is mighty trick. I can see me shooting mucho film with the IIIG. It is a fun camera that wears like a peice of jewelry. I will admit that I was deeply impressed by Jim's IIIC and I missied my old IIIG. Perhaps I will name my camera James.

Cal

Thanks Cal, I have those still haha. Maybe I'll make something quick just for fun.

John,

For me shooting is fun, but end product is work. Anyways that's what I'm learning as I untanged the huge mess that I've created over the past 7 years by just concentrating on shooting.

The editing gives me a head ache. How many tens of thousands of images can you look at untill things get blurry.

The other thing is that printing is big dollars. The real big plan here is eventually get my own darkroom. I forcefully secured a two year lease with only a $100.00 increase, but two years from now I hope to move into a larger space, and my goal is to have my own darkroom. That's when I can get really serious about the log jam I've created.

Yes, that is where digital has its advantages...it's easier to keep up with. Film was a lot harder in those terms. However, I think you'll be more stringent with your edit since so much time has gone by. I find that I edit quickly and make my monthly books and that's a great quick edit. However, when I go back after a year and look again, I'm fine with getting rid of a lot more.

Yeah, even someone like me who likes editing (and has a time tested workflow) can only do it in small batches.

I hear ya Cal and agree. If I'm going to use film, I want to use a darkroom. Scanning is just not my thing. That is the part of the chain I just don't care for. I'm going to buy a printer again... but I most likely will stick to 12x18 as my large size for now. If I ever have an opportunity to show and they want large prints, I'll deal with it then.

All of your LTM gear is what I'm most jealous about at this point. I don;t want to shoot 35mm film, but if I did... the IIIg is a must.

John,

You are correct. With film I've created a disaster. Jeff is correct in comparing me to Garry Winnogran. The one thing I do think is a bonus is that editing after a long time of just waiting allows for the outstanding images to stand out more. In the end only the best images that display the best technic get printed. Isn't this what editing is about.

I find the work flow with digital to be faster and convenient, not so with developing film. I'm hoping the same speed and convenience gets conveighted in printing. It seems the way I shoot digital that the files only need minor tweaking and nothing more than Lightroom is needed. I'm really glad that I held out on getting a 27 inch Eizo, and next to buying my Monochrom it has been the best money I ever spent. I suggest don't buy a printer untill you also add in the price of the biggest Eizo or NEC Spectravue you can afford. Money well spent.

You know me: I call my Monochrom my "hand scanner" and because I'm a lazy slacker dude why would I ever want to take the same picture twice, which is what you are trying to do at best when you copy a negative using a scanner.

For me I don't mind having two descrete ways of doing photography seperately: one analog; and the other digital. I've arranged my gear so I try to maximize each camera as being "The best tool for the job," to quote you.

I don't see needing Tri-X anymore as a general purpose film, because I want to shoot slower speed films for resolution, less contrast, and broader tonality. My Fuji GL690 and Plaubel I intend on using for night photograpghy to exploit the 6x9 negative. Tri-X will only be used in 120 shot at 1250 ISO for the subway and night shooting hand held. I feel the only way to justify keeping these cameras is to use them, and if it is in a crazy manner it is mucho good.

The Pentax 67II is my TTL flash camera for night shooting with Acros. Also I'll be blasting away with all my Leicas and Nikons with Acros. Eventually I want to start bulk loading Kodak 5222.

13x19 is a good size print. My Epson 3880 can print 17x22 which is big enough. For the few special files that have all the right things: IQ, image, and tonality; there is Digital Silver Imaging. At the PhotoPlusExpo I spent a lot of time in their booth and I was very impressed by their quality, especially some 20x30's that were shot with a Leica Monochrom.

I can't tell you the amount of money and effort all this is costing, but I has some crazy and ambitious plans ahead. Also know that "Maggie's" blog is starting to get a lot of acclaim and it has only been a little more than 3 months. She is actually getting solicited with money paying opportunities and all these invites. She keeps on getting invited to these fashion parties by Yellow Magizine, but we don't go because the parties start at 11 PM on a Wednesday. Even on a weekend one of these parties work likely kill me. With age the hardest thing to do is stay out late.

1-month vacation? wow, I am really envious, Pramodh!

Back at the end of the Cold War I had two very long vacations: one was for a year; and the second one six months. Back then they were called layoffs.

Those vacations were not so much fun.

Yeah Jean-marc. Getting a month and change off. I have a very understanding boss. It also dosen't hurt that I haven't taken any time off for the last 2 years:eek:. Not having a fun time figuring out what to take with me
