Over the years I have acquired one or two Japanese camera books -- via camera fairs or UK and Hong Kong eBay - very much "equipment porn" but illustrated by photos taken with the equipment and obviously produced by enthusiasts - not surprisingly there is a plethora of Leica stuff but these are not exclusive and usually include much comparison with Voigtlander-Cosina/Hexar/Contax old Canon/Nikon etc, also strip-downs and user reports.

These books are so well illustrated that I don't worry too much about only getting to page 2 of "Learn Japanese Script". For example I spent a long time thinking a star rating of all the lenses in one book was for bokeh when it stood for rarity.

If any members have seen these they'll know what I mean. Publishers series "For Tasty Life" (!), Gaken Camera Mook and others, sizes A5 to A4, typically soft bound and 100-150 pp, with few ads. I'm not referring to the monthly camera periodicals or the current camera model user books/manuals.

Question -- how can occidentals buy these? I can find some on Japanese Amazon, but cannot bid etc with my log on. Is there any European/American language supplier with a broad range out there?

post by fotobiblios (interest - mostly 'serious' books of photography, but I get a boost of camera and especially lens acquisition syndrome on a regular basis (and then take my best pix with a battered old half-frame Konica vfdr))

I'm not sure if it is something specific to your ips or whatever but go to amazon jp and click the English button on the top right of the top page.
When the English page comes up look on the left side: assistance for new customers.
