An office-mate of my wife's has a significant other who is a drummer for The Wise Guys, who play at Zea's Bar & Grill in Albuquerque, on Tuesday nights.

These images are just an initial attempt at learning to shoot nightclub images under ambient light only.

G1, ISO800, 20mm-f/1.7 lens, dynamic B/W mode. A bit of curves adjustment in PS.

I love this kind of atmospheric shot, and think you've done a great job.

Next time, how about pulling back for a few wider shots that show more context? This would help balance out the good selection of medium and detail shots you already have.

Have you seen Lee Tanner's book The Jazz Image? I suspect you'd like it. There's a link at the end of this snarky review on my snarky blog...

Thanks, J.L.; I appreciate the advice. This venue is a crowded little bar seating area, so a wider shot easily gets people sitting at booths and tables. But I do need to learn how to work within these types of real-world limitations.

I think the G1/20mm-f/1.7 is a great combination. I have some legacy glass even faster (f/1.2) but narrower angle of view; these might work for closeups of performer's faces.

I like your blog, keep up the good writing. And thanks for the tip on Tanner's book.

~Joe
