I uploaded some photos last night, all sized at 800 pixel width as per usual and they all looked great at home. I don't usually mess with my gallery stuff at work, but I came here today and checked them out. They're really huge! I don't like the look.
So the question: What screen area setting do most people have? I'm trying to find a standard size for my photos that doesn't take up the entire screen to view for most people. What pixel dimentions do you guys size to for the galleries here?

I set gallery uploads at 72 dpi and size at either seven or 10 inches on the long side.

Hi,
You can probably right-click on a photo in the gallery when viewing it and get its properties, including pixel dimensions. Find one that looks right to you and see what size it is. Also, if you can simply reduce your scanned images by an even 1/2, they might have less 'stairsteps' effects on diagonal lines, etc. 530ish by 800ish fits a smaller 17" monitor well.

Good call on the clicking the properties. Hadn't thought of that.
So Joe, what are your screen area settings??

Yeah. Very bad thread name.
I size my stuff for here and flickr at about 600x400 and scan at about 100 ppi. That's big enough to see and gives a manageable file size around 70K. The pics in my gallery are actually 6x4 inch proof prints scanned on a flatbed.

Assuming the worst case scenario of 800x600 pixel screen, for photos to be viewed in an email client, I usually resize them to 600 pixels in width. For photos to be viewed on the web, 720 pixels in width. This should leave enough room for scroll bars, buttons, and all that other stuff. If the email client and browser are maximized on the screen, the photos should look ok.

I don't find this info now, but there has been a limit of "less than 800 pixels" for the long side of gallery uploads, with a 300k file size limit (I see now 350k for Premium members). I have been sizing my photos for upload to 798 pixels max, and about 150k.
FWIW, on Photo.net, photos for insertion in message threads (maybe the gallery too) have to be less than 512 pixels WIDE and be under 100k in file size... and don't forget to add caption text or the pic won't show anyway!
