Johnny has a problem with his QL17 GIII while on a trip

Gosu_john aka as Johnny from the singapore threads is on a trip out of the country when he phones me to tell me his QL17 GIII's shutter is not working. Poor boy! and his trip has just started. He has tried it out in both modes auto and manual to no avail. The pair of blades behind are closed permanently. The ones in front, the aperture ones move when the shutter is depressed.

When he depressed the shutter, the aperture blades closed in but did not fire. I don't think he has any tools on him right now. Oh yes, just to add on, he mentions that it was working well yesterday and he has taken out the film but the situation does not improve.

Would there be any simple solution to the problem?

Well I know the G-III blocks the shutter release if it's in auto mode and the aperture needed is out of the scale, but seems he already tried it in manual mode with no luck...

I wish I knew what to do... other than try replace the battery or check the ASA dial (it may be set too high).

The Canonet blocks the shutter, as Oscar noted, when there's a chance of an under- or overexposure. If he already tried to overrun the AE by using it in manual mode and had no luck... it's a shutter issue.

Hi,
It is worth checking to make sure that the selftimer is fully off. They are prone to jamming and unless it is fully off the shutter will not fire. He may have knocked it. That's about the ony "simple" fix I can think off at the moment.

Sign.... so it's a shutter issue. Does that mean a lens dis assembly is in order? I doubt he'll be able to do it now though. It's nighttime in Malaysia and he's probably on a dark highway on a bus with very little light and a few bumps in the road. Not the best place for some camera surgery.

I have started packing jewel screwdrivers in the camera bag. But this will need a spanner and Ronsonol.

Hello all, thank you for the kind concern. I have returned from the trip with not a single shot in the bag. 🙁

But, this morning when I took the camera out again, I was shocked to find the shutter working as per normal. I have no idea how this could be but some mysterious force working to prevent me from any photo taking oppurtunities in Kuala Lumpur.

Very dreaful to imagine how this could possibly happen when I eventually bring it out on a trip again.
