I dig up dead people
Hi,
Quick question, I don't feel right without a lens-hood and I'm about to buy one of the heavystar hoods for my J-8 and Helios, my question is can I get by with the standard hood on a J-12, or do I need to buy a wide-angle hood? It's not a big deal the wide-angle hood that heavystar sells is only $7 but being a college student every dime I can save goes a long ways (books set me back a fortune this semester
) so I figured I'd ask before putting in the order. Thanks!

In my experience, you don't really need one on the J12. The lens is really recessed and the front of the lens body acts well enough as a hood. An accessory hood would only make aperture adjustment more difficult, IMO.

Unless, of course, a filter is used.ray_g said:In my experience, you don't really need one on the J12. The lens is really recessed and the front of the lens body acts well enough as a hood.
Sometimes I wish there was a tiny (yellow) filter with a rubber housing that one could simply wedge into the Jupiter-12, maybe with a piece of string attached to pull it back out. That way the built-in hood could still be used.

Go to your local photo shop and dig through the bargain box and find a 49 mm rubber lens hood. Pull the rubber part off the metal part. Now, the rubber part will slip nicely over the J-12! And you can still easily use a filter.

I go along with ray_g, a hood isn't really necessary on a J12. A while back I bought this hood (since it was cheap) from American Eagle at the Bay for $4.95 +S&H. I've used it on both my J12 w/o filter and Orion 15 w/ filter. Again, not really necessary, but adds a little extra shading and allows me to adjust aperture on the J12 more easily simply by turning the hood. (Filter + hood on the Orion makes aperture difficult to adjust.) If you'd rather spend money elsewhere, forget the hood. If you got a few bucks, I've been very satisfied with this one.

Thanks everybody, my j-12 should arrive by wed, I think I'll shoot some film without a hood under different lighting conditions and see for myself how it handles, thanks again!

I'll simply add to this to say that I've never used a hood on my J-12's and have yet to get it to flare... and I can do that to most lenses by simply looking at them :bang: :bang: :bang: Even the SC Skopar I had could be made to flare where I couldn't make the J-12. I guess I'd say that your plan of shooting first and seeing how it works for you is the best thing to do.
Enjoy! I consider the J-12 to be the best of the FSU lenses. I can (and have) replace the J-8s, J-9s & J-11s I've owned, but there's just something about the J-12...

I use a J-12 on a Kiev 4 and 4A. I don't use a lens hood unless I use filters. I managed to find a Series VI Tiffen wide-angle lens hood and use it with a 40.5mm to Series VI adapter. I generally use Series type filters on my vintage stuff. See the attached photos.
