Steve, I like your pix and what the J-8 can do. Luck has much to do with FSU equipment purchases. Here is a J-8 shot with some Leica film (Kodachrome 64) in the Colonel's Zorki-4. I wasn't happy with my J-8 till I used the Kodachrome. Regards.

Well, since you've repented and have set your sights on another J8, I guess you're okay........ sorta. But I'm watchin' ya! Now I'll probably have nightmares about your poor little Zorki 4/Jupiter 8 lying there in the damp rubbish....... alone......... cold.,,,,,,,,dark.

Sorry to say this, but am still quite unrepentant about that Zorki, the lens yes I do regret, but the camera itself was a pig. It must have been the one that was made at five minutes after 9am on the day after a public holiday when the Russians first Launched Yuri Gagarin into space and they all had a colossal hangover. 😛

Never mind eh. Anyway I have actually visited Russia some years ago, or the Soviet Union as it was still then, and a most interesting experience it was too. I also got to visit places like Uzbekistan that you'd never get into these days, so not everything about progress is good.

I must admit that I did lust after a piece of Russian hardware, but in this case it was one of the Ural/Dnepr BMW copy motorcycle combinations complete with reverse gear and machine gun mount! 😎

Here are my recent pics of a black J-8 on my Zorki-6. Film was Kodak BW400CN. First was shot at f4 @ 1/100, and the second at f11 @ 1/500.

By the way, does anybody know year of production of this lens (s/n : 0186147)

I was stunned at first to see the sort of images the J8 can produce.

Here is an image I put in the first RFF book taken with my black FED2/J8 combo (pictured in my gallery) on slide film cross processed C41. The cropped image is @ 100% from the scan I had made 😎

This J8 came with the Zorki 4K last year, $30 total.
I was happily surprised at the result.
Film XP2 @ 400, indoors, no flash.

Oh, I wouldn't go that far. I've seen evidence that the fellas at KMZ went through periods where they were capable of producing pigs any time of day, any day of the week... holiday or no! ... with striking regularity 😉

It seems that it is more cost effective to purchase a zorki with a J8 attached. Also, the better deal seems to be a j8 or j9 in a Kiev/Contax mount. Why is that? I thought these two lenses had a reputation for performing better on a Kiev.

My LTM J8 came attached to the Zorki 3M I picked up this past fall. I like it a lot. I also have a J8 attached to my Kiev, but haven't had time to develop the roll I took with it. (sigh)

Having never owned a Kiev, I'm speaking completely from what I've read. Maybe some Kiev owners can shed some more or better light on this. But, yep, the Kievs and lenses you mentioned IMHO put out some great shots. The somewhat lower cost of Contax/Kiev mount Jupiters goes along with the slightly lower costs of Kiev bodies. This, again from what I've read, is due partly to the fact that the Kievs are a fairly more complicated body to work on and repair than Zorkis/FEDs. I don't know that they break more often. The folks that shoot Kievs here at RFF don't seem to imply that at all. But I guess when they do malfunction, they're a little more involved to fix and adjust. Thus, lower priced bodies and lower priced lenses.

I've had fewer issues with Kiev 4 and 4A bodies than FED and Zorkis. I think the reason that Kiev RFs and Kiev/Contax lenses are more of a bargain is because of the lens mount. The LTM stuff may have more of a demand than the Contax mount stuff, especially when you look for the 35mm Jupiter-12 and 85mm Jupiter-9 lenses.
