Hello
The recently arrived silver Jupiter-8 was tested and the results are very satisfactory; however, the rings of Distance and Aperture are misplaced : both scales seem to be displaced 1 cm to the same side.
Detailed instructions for the disassembly of the lens are easy to find, but I would like to ask if someone has dealt with this kind of problem and what shoud I expect to find (and what to do once I open the lens). Is it an easy repair or is it better to leave it with this (irritating) fault ?
Thank you in advance
Joao

A detailed guide can be found here (downloadable pdf). It is fairly easy and it is most likely that you won't have to collimate it afterwards.

thank you Nikos. I was just trying to find if the replacement of the scale rings had any tricky points to be aware of.
This lens has been disassembled and I wonder why the person who reassembled it did not care to correct this obvious malposition of the rings...
I'll give it a try very soon.

Joao, I'm stuck in hospital and no J-8 at hand but could the helix thread be reassembled one turn out of the correct place ? Easy to do if you don't mark the correct starting place for ease of reassembly.

My best wishes for a speedy and full recovery !
With no experience in opening a J-8, I was thinking the same way as you. I only wanted to find if there were any unexpected problems or tricky procedures I should be aware of. Because it seems strange that whoever reassembled the lens did not care to mount the rings in the right position.
As I said above, I will try it myself.
Best regards

theres a few versions with different construction. the '62 version I have has a focus ring held on by 3 tiny screws. loosen these to put the focus ring in the right position and then re-tighten.

Could easily be. I just cannot remember. It's been 10 years since I had one apart and I had a different reason to look inside.
It's just a niggle in the old brain.
