I'm just getting going with my Bessa R J8 set up and so far I'm loving it. As soon as I can get some scans or some form of digitizing I'll put some photos up.
I just received today in the mail a metal lens hood from Fedka. I don't know of any other metal hood that'll fit so I got that one, figuring it add some protection and keep it from flaring. However, when putting it on my lens the hood takes up a good fifth or so of the viewfinder space. It also does this on my newly aquired Fed3. I guess the only way to solve this problem would be to cut slits or something. So anyway my main question is do people just get used to this problem? And how much does the Jupiter 8 really flare, do I really even need a hood? Should I buy the plastic hood from fedka?

I posted more or less the same question the other day in the bessa forum but noone had anything to say, so I thought I'd try you guys out. So far I've found this forum very helpful, and once I learn my tools I hope to able be to contribute and help as much as I get helped. Thanks

The solution I use is opening the other eye all the time...

Some J8 are really good in bad conditions especially if you dont go wider then 2.2, but if you got a good one the last thing it needs is a bent filter ring, so the hood is still necessary for exposed photo use.

The most critical thing is does the hood scallop the rangefinder at any range.

Some e-bay suppliers offer vented hoods to minimise viewfinder cut off but this may not help with the range finder, dependent on model of cam.

I use a (old metal) Hoya which is quite deep but small in diam.

Heliopan make a very nice lens hood in metal in 40.5 size which is the same diameter i.e.42mm, as the front of the lens about 1 cm deep and ridged inside.
you can even put the lens cap over the end, just like a CV lens. There are two types tele and standard/wide. you can even screw two w/a ones together to make a tele one!!!!
Works for me!

I got the vented hood from americaneagle [I think] to use with J.8, though I don't use it often. On the Jupiter.8 I haven't had so much trouble with unintentional flaring. As far as the hood taking up space in the VF, shooting Zorkis, I've just kind of gotten used to it. It really irritates some folks, but it's no big deal to me, even on a Zorki.1.

I will bring this up again, because I just became the owner of a nice J8. Now I am looking for the "right" hood. Does anyone know how the original J8 hoods look like? Here are some 40.5mm hoods from epay. Which one would you recommend?

The hood 150139406717 should not cover the rangefinder much I guess, so that is my favorite for the moment. Or should I look for something else (more tight) ? Thx.

I've had some flare from my J-8, but nothing too unpleasant. I got the metal fedka hood a little while back, and I've been happy with it -- haven't had any framing or focusing issues with it on. If it really bothers you, try using an auxiliary viewfinder.
