Jupiter 8 question

Sorry to resurect this thread, but I've just received my chrome J8 (SN: 6390483, does that mean it was made in 1983?)
The problem I'm having is the aperature ring is too loose, with some forward backward play as well.
Does anyone know how to tighten it up / point me in the right direction?

This(Kim Coxon's info ) should be pretty helpful. An assortment of useful info there!
The general rule about serial numbers is that the first two # are the year so yours is probably 1963.

Hi,
I glad my work is being used. The slack aperture ring is caused by a break down in the grease. There is nothing to "tighten" as such. You need to dismantle the front part of the lens and re-grease it using a medium to heavy graphite type grease. Normal automotive grease is too light as well as beaing mineral based.

For aperture rings on rangefinder lenses that are sloppy (such as Jupiter-8's and Industars, not SLR's!) I have been using Radio Shack Lube Gel, part no. 64-2326. It keeps the ring from moving around by itself. It's too viscous for SLR's though and probably too viscous for lens helicals.

A 3 ounce tube costs $0.97.

I know this has been answered before, but it was long ago. What lens hood fits the Kiev version of the j8? The same as the LTM version?

I use the same hood on my Jupiter 8m for my Kiev cameras as I do on my LTM Jupiters. It is sold by HeavyStar and worth the fews dollars it cost.

I just managed to unscrew the lens unit from my type 4 jupiter 8, using Kims excellent instructions. This got me worried, because I only found ONE alloy shim! Is that normal or am I one shim short?
