I want to try one of these on my Leica M7 or Zeiss Ikon camera. Is it a screw on or M mount? I assume it is coupled to my rangefinder? Any particular model I want to look for.

It's screw-mount, rangefinder coupled, focuses down to slightly less than 1 m and I have a 1966 one which I am very happy with - like so many others here as well.
I understand that on the newer black ones, the front lens rotates - if that's an issue for you.

As with most other LTM lenses, they should work very well with an LTM/M adapter and you will retain the RF coupling. Unlike the J3, there tend to be few problems with the J8 as far as focus etc. The earlier chrome ones are perhaps more convenient to use as has already been mentioned.

I bought 2, since they are so cheap, just in case one was a dud. If you do a google search you can find Brian's instruction on how to tear one down if need be. I'm still waiting for mine to come in the mail... Fom what I see on here and on flickr they have the nice sonnar look.

If you pick up a late black one, get one marked "Jupiter-8" in latin font on the front namering and "Made in USSR" on the focusing ring.
These markings tell that this is an "export model" having gone through a very satisfying QC process.
Since they don't sell for more than the black ones with cyrillic letters on their front namering and made for the domestic market with probably no QC, I think it's a tip to keep in mind. Worked for me. My 1982 black J-8 is absolutely outstanding.
