The good news is the glass in excellent. Blades are dry. It's obviously been open at some point.

The bad news is the outer module is a bit loose. So when you focus, as you turn the ring, you can move it in and out a bit--the entire head from the outer distance scale to the filter threads. Helical grease feels dry.

Brian, is there a simple way to take up this play, or just count my blessings and use as is? I have 30 day trial.

On the amedeo adapter it turns pretty stiff, but on the contax, it turns much easier, and the finger wheel spins nicely. That's no biggie, as I have other much nicer canon 85s, so this would be just for the contax.

TY as always
Charlie

ahhh I found a nice tutorial with the same version I have
http://www3.telus.net/public/rpnchbck/Jupiter-9 dismantle.html

Now that I have the optics out---they are so sweet I can't believe it. And I'm looking things over. Super stiff grease on the helical and it looks like focusing in this condition has developed play between inner and outer helicals. My I-61 was like this too. Thank god its a simple lens and only the helical I have to deal with. But I don't want to wreak it now.

My jis slothead is too wide for screws on outer ring on top of the helical. When I study watchmakers screwdrivers they have sizes like .9 etc

Any idea what size/s I should try or is there a "russian" standard? Forgive silly questions.

Jupiter-9 for Contax/Kiev is well covered by the Kiev Survival Guide.

I have a chrome lens of about the same age that I need to tear down as well- way too much focus slop to use the lens. I use a later black lens, which had to be shimmed for use. When new, the buyers were encouraged to have the lenses set to match the camera being used.

If the lens is loose with dry grease, chances are a thick grease must be used to replace it to take up the slop on the helicals.

For screwdrivers: I have a selection of Wiha screwdrivers and pick the one to use "at run time".

uhoh7, looks like you got a really nice J-9. The J-9 that I formerly owned performed identically to my CZJ version of the lens on the Contax cameras, but had similar issues as your lens with regard to fit and finish.

TY guys

just a quick infinity check here with my sharpest 85 as control

J9 vs Canon 85/1.8 LTM

here is the basic shot

These are raw from camera to LR untouched then to jpeg, so tonality does differ.

This J9 seems no slouch to my eye 🙂
Canon is pretty hard to approach though

Weight
canon: 484 g
J9: 343 g
J9 with amedeo adapter to M: 424 g

Brian,
What would you use for "heavy grease"?

I have a very late black Jupiter-9 in M42 that I like a lot for portraits. Someone relubed it, I believe, because most of these were supposed to be too stiff in focusing. Mine is not too bad. Like I said though, mine is from 1987 so apples and oranges I guess. It's not anywhere near as sharp as my Nikkor-H 85mm f1.8 but I still like it.

Would like to find one in Contax-Kiev mount at some point.

TY everyone for great comments.

Having taken a crash course on J9s in the last 48 hours, it does seem they are just all over the place. Wonderful soft ones, all sorts of useless ones, and some like this one, seem to have heavy zeiss genes.

Over at MFlenses, where I've learned a ton in the last two years, there was a thread going "How to pick a sharp J9"

I threw up these crops---with the exception that I left out "LTM" before Canon 85/1.8 - not on purpose. "What do we think?" I asked after this last infinity set.

A regular, Orio, who knows alot replied:

"that the J9 is penalized by the older coating resulting in a loss of contrast compared to the modern and ultra-contrasted EF 1.8/85
But aside from that, the two lenses show similar resolvance."

I nearly fell out of my chair. Just shows how good Jiro Mukai really was!

Anyway this copy seems nice enough to give it a reprieve from my ham hands. Per suggestion from Brian, this captured zeiss is now on its way to the Bronx, and the gentle hands of Jerry Sorin 🙂

I'll report when I get it back. Thank you Brian.

I just got one of these recently from fedka, mounts easily on my kiev 4a and contax iiia, but having trouble mounting on my amedeo adapter, when i focus to infinity it stops at 100 feet. any tips for mounting on amedeo adapter and in general? is a little play in the mount normal? i also find it difficult to unmount from the adapter, it looks like a beauty, just hope it agrees with my rangefinder closeup and wideopen

thanks
Nik

Maybe others can answer this better, but I had a lot of trouble mounting my Zeiss and Kiev lenses on my Amedeo adapter too. This adapter is Contax/Nikon to micro four thirds. The Nikon lenses mount just fine but the others are very tight or some didn't mount at all. I ended up buying another adapter from Kipon for using the Zeiss and Kiev lenses and didn't try to force any on the Amedeo adapter. I suppose I could have sent it back to him but I didn't want to risk losing it, since it works so well with my Nikon RF lenses.

I know this isn't much help but there are apparently tight tolerances that have to be dealt with.

Thanks! for clarification my adapter is Contax to Leica purchased this year. The lens is usable just difficult to mount and un mount. I set both lens and adapter to infinity before mounting, correct?
The lens I am having trouble with is Jupiter 9. No trouble with inner bayonet lenses like opton sonnar 50 1.5 or Jupiter 8-m
Nik

Hi, yes I realize this, but I wanted to let you know that these adapters, since they are individually handmade, may require some tweaking to make the lenses fit. Maybe if you contact Amedeo he could advise you. Good luck with yours.

It's a great adapter works perfectly wide open with my opton sonnar 1.5. I just wanted some tips for using with external bayonet lenses like the Jupiter 9. Thank you for the responses
Nik

The porblems turned out to be inconsequential, I got 2 rolls back from processing today, both the adapter and kiev 4 a shots tuned out wonderfully, focus was spot on and sharp closeup and wide open, very happy with Fedka.com and this lens, mine is a chrome from 1960

Thanks
Nik
