I bought a Jupiter 9 last year and except for a stiff focus ring, it was a great lens. But the focus issue has been real turn off so I finally decided to get into it and thanks to the instructions on the Kiev Survival site, I cleaned out all the old junk, relubed it, put it all back together, did a rough check of the working distance and heaved a sigh of relief.
But to my dismay the improvement was not as dramatic as hoped for. I thought the focus ring would be silky smooth but it's not the case. It has definitely improved but there is still a fair amount of resistance and it gets more as I focus closer. It's tolerable until about 2m and then it gets pretty hard to turn.

So my question is, did I screw up somewhere or is this just the best I can get with this particular specimen?

Do you own a Kiev mount Jupiter 9 with silky smooth focus?

The instructions on my site are for the LTM version. 😉

Did you get all the helicoids apart? On Kims site (pentax-manuals something) there is an extensive manual to take the lens apart for relubing.

Sounds like too much lube got in the guide channels. That is where those blocks held with screws travel. When you get down the lower F stops, you are being held back by hydraulic pressure.

Thanks for the replies.

Greyhoundman, I think you are right! I realized I had overdone the greasing when after putting it back together and turning the focus ring, I saw grease being squeezed out like toothpaste from the helicoid area. I turned it a few more times and wiped off all excess grease but there must have been a lot still inside.

But it seems to have gotten better after leaving it overnight so I'll wait a couple of days before opening it up again.
