Just a RAW Apple rant

I switched to Lightroom because Aperture couldn't handle Sigma X3F files, I've stuck with it now even though I don't shoot digital anymore, I think it's the better app, although they are both great.

I didn't read everyones post but Adobe has a DNG Converter that is a free program. You might try that before going LightRoom. I know that Apple is very controlling and proprietary so maybe it will not work using DNG with Aperture.

Let's face it... Lightroom is vastly more important to Adobe's profits than Aperture is to Apple's profits. Nothing will change this.

I'm glad that I had to switch to LR 4 because I'm finding it much easier to navigate and do what I want in PP. That said, if I had just bought the XP1 recently I'd probably be using AccuRaw to develop the raw files and then send them to Aperture.

Not according to several folks who write raw conversion software. The Fuji sensors are much much more difficult to come up with an algorithm that encompasses a good balance between sharpness, color purity, and minimized cross-channel bleeding. They also take more processing time (although that might not be so evident to the end user as it is to the person measuring performance at the low levels) as the cell size for a processing unit is larger than the cell size for a Bayer mosaic processing unit.

Plusses and minuses. To me, the question remains as to whether the different mosaic design actually produces superior qualities in the image beyond what is feasible with more standard sensors. I have seen nothing that convinces me of this as yet.

The problem with this is that if you use the latest DNG Converter v7.4 to convert a Fuji file to DNG format, and then use an older version of Camera Raw to do the raw conversion, you're right back where you started with a raw converter which is NOT optimized to handle the Fuji sensor properly. DNG conversion does not change the nature of the sensor data or mosaic pattern, it simply re-writes the native raw file data into a standards based structure.

Godfrey, too confusing for an analog guy, but I'll take your word. Somehow I can't understand why we have all these propritory tech things when there really isn't a reason for it. Or maybe I'm confused again.

Also confusing is the Pentax K-01 DNG won't work on Aperture (not that I would use it). What's going on with them.

I'm buying Adobe Lightroom 4 today, because Apple won't update Aperture to handle the RAW files from the X-Pro 1.

I knew this when I bought the Fuji, I'm just now dealing with reality.

Same here, almost. Aperture won't do RAW files from the X-10, either. It wasn't a huge problem because the X-10 JPEGS are so good. But I have just installed LR4. Now I can download X-10 RAW files.

I haven't read the LR4 instructions. I'm just poking around, and finding it mostly pretty intuitive. It seems like it's a bit more basic than Aperture in some ways, although it does have a lens correction feature that Aperture does not.

I could never get into Aperture or LR... Just can't get my head around the whole catalog idea. I've been doing it so long with PS and separate keyword apps and catalog apps that I think I will forever be unable to change 🙂 - Plus I have spent more on PS plug-in apps than I have on PS, so I'm stuck 🙂

There are a few alternatives for you though. You might try Capture One - terrific app - free trial available.

Also you could convert the raw files with DNG converter and then process the tif in Aperture?

Or, If you are feeling burned by it all, save some money and get PSE and you get the ACR app that really is the most important part of Photoshop.

No doubt that just when you get used to some new workflow, Apple will finally come around and fix Aperture... the way of life 🙂

Good luck - doesn't sound like it's keeping you from shooting and that's the main thing.

David, I feel the same disappointment with Apple. I also have an XPro1 and use Aperture. I've always loved the more intuitive nature of Apple software and I don't plan on switching to another application. I tried Lightroom for a few months some time ago and found it to be too much of a struggle.

I'm actually not missing RAW processing with the Fuji files. I find that prints made from these files are gorgeous and I doubt that a bunch more fussing with RAW files would make the final prints any better. I'm pretty much to the point that I don't care if Apple updates Aperture. The XPro1 has freed up a lot of my post-processing time. Thank you Fuji, and keep the great cameras coming! Now if Fuji could just see their way to coming out with a few manual focus X-mount lenses!! 😀

I always shot Jpg+raw. Most of the time I can use the jpg straight from the camera. The raw is for tricky situations where I need the extra couple of stops that is still retained in the raw file. I will export from aperture to RPP. I guess I should try LR again to,c if capture one is still better or not.

Will always re-import to,Aperture for final work.
