David, the Ural is a development of a copy of an early BMW design, so it has diverged from later BMWs. Based on what I've found, it was either a copy from 5, secretly-obtained, BMW R71s, or was supplied under licence. Either way, later BMWs depart considerably from it in many details. A bit like FED and Zorki moved on from the original Leica "copies".

A pity they didn't think of copying the Brough Superior, I'd have a stable of them then; although if they are as much trouble as the 60's small wheeled push bikes...

The BMW R75 like the FIAT 124 were chosen by the Soviets because they were the best technological available at the time, but they weren't meant to be a "luxury" mean of transportation like the Superior, then they were completely redesigned because they had to work on hard roads and turn on at -50 degs.
The Lada 1200 is a sort of tank with very thick sheetmetal bodywork in comparison to the original italian car.

The Tupolev TU144, er, it crashed! The first one at the Paris air show in 1973 and another in 1978, by which time they realised it wasn't quite right.
