I am just off the phone with Robert White ordering the demo model of the Epson R-1Ds they had for sale (still an R-D1 available). Apart from all the information and advice I got here (thank you all) the final go/no go decision depended on Epson standing by their product. I therefore sent the following to Epson UK (extract):

"Before saying go I need to be assured. Everything can break – and what happens then! For how long will Epson UK guarantee that repair can be carried out by Epson or its affiliates on the R-D1s (fully payable of course)?"

This was what Epson said:

"In reply to your email, I can confirm that after the 12 month warranty has expired we would be able to offer an out of warranty Return to Base service for any repairs for a fee. The product would have to be sent in and then a repair quote would be made for you to either accept or decline as required.

Regards
Andrew Nicholls"

Despite not specifying for how long Epson would be able to do that it is good enough for me and good news in general. Now, why is not Robert White living next door ;)

I have got a more detailed answer regarding the support of the R-D1/s

In reply to your email, Epson will offer out of warranty services for as long as there is a demand. We believe products usually have a shelf life of between 5 - 10 years. Customers who have printers that are 10 years old are still able to obtain out of warranty services even if this includes fixed price upgrades to the latest models.
Impressive - and just as impressive is that the camera came today - that's about 16 hours delivery - impressed :) - just wished the charger was faster. And that I had smaller hands - there ain't a lot of space on that Voigtländer 35mm pancake II lens!
