The best camera is one that still works!
I'm insatiably curious to find out how many people here are actually going to be straight up X100 owners ... no ifs, buts or maybes ... you're either getting it now or your not! Six months from now who cares, because by then we'll all be salivating over the next miracle mirrorless digital.
I've noticed that Joe is flip flopping over his decision to own one and I can't help but wonder if some of the other 'I have to have one' brigade are doing the same?
Me ... I'm getting one that fell off the back of a truck!

Film is not just funny, it's a problem Gabor ... I've discovered it's taking up most of the room in my freezer.
How will I test the X100?

Have mine. Is worth the wait. Only two arrived in local store. I was first to put down a deposit so was first on the list. Hopefully you get yours soon Keith.

There's people throughout the western world waiting for these things and Auckland has a couple already ... what goes on here?
Brisbane must be about the same population as Auckland ... where's mine?

No. A redundant piece of machine that does nothing that hasn't been done before. And what it does now is no where near worth to spend 1000 dollars on. Imagine what you can do with 1000 dollars, but people insist on dropping it on something that is 'but a thing'. Stop being so materialistic.

Personally I think a thousand dollars does bugger all these days ... it did a lot when I was a kid though!
And suggesting that people here stop being materialistic is bold ... I admire your 'chutzpah!'

It was a yes, until Amazon UK priced the thing at £899 for April shipment, and so now I'm waiting. If Amazon can sell it for that price clearly the launch price (£999) is a decent premium and will fall once stock becomes widely available.
Its a completely pointless and illogical purchase, I could get a similarly good compact RF (e.g. Oly 35RC) and about 90 rolls processed/scanned for the same price. Given the rate I shoot at these days that's probably 9 years of film photography, by which time we'll have a large format digital view camera with movements for the price of a Holga*
*OK, slight exaggeration.

Improving daily--I think.
So far the X100 is looking really good but I can't afford one at the moment so the enforced wait means I really get to find out how the camera performs before I put any money down. And no, just because my name is Keith I'm not expecting one to fall off the back of a truck. I have lots of other toys to play with in the interim--20+ cameras as we speak. My wife has told me that if I want anything more I have more than enough stuff to sell in order to finance the purchase. But..the one nice thing about having that much stuff around is that she doesn't know if I do slip another body or lens onto the shelf--not that I would ever cheat on "her"...

NO!
I am stuck 9 hours per day in a full digital workflow.
I would never ever touch a digital camera after end of work...

Keith - I think the one thing this thread will prove is that the people who have decided to buy, and the people have have decided not to buy, will both have perfectly reasonable and logical reasons for their decision. However, some of the negatives seems to awfully emphatic and repetitive about it!

Yes ... I did get the odd whiff of film verses digital myself!

I invested in the great Leica M system - film and digital. Why on earth shall I leave this amazingly compact and enjoyable system at home for the sake of a little p&s which gimmecks a rangefinder.

I'll be buying one but will wait for the first ones to develop bugs and be fixed before I get mine.I usually don't buy when things are first released.

I weighed a few of my cameras last night. The M4/Summicron 35/2 weighs in at 900gm. The Hexar with the same lens is just 5gm lighter. The dSLR with my nearest equivalent lens is 1021gm. (And I feel the difference.)
The X100 specs promise a mass of 445gm with card and batteries.
As I get older that starts to sound attractive in some situations. And I would still have the option of using the other systems when they would suit my needs better.

Dear Chris,
True, but whenever I advance this argument to myself, I reflect that with a minimum of self-discipline (eat and drink a little less, exercise a little more) I could lose the weight of my M9 and any single lens I own for it. With more effort I could probably lose the weight of a small Leica system (2 bodies, 5 lenses).
Cheers,
R.
