It rained all day today so I thought it would be a good time to work on my Fed2. On my other post I described my problem with the sticky shutter curtain. Well I gave it a temporary fix, but I just wasn't satisifed. Today,I said, I'm going to delve into this thing and if I screw it up well then the heck with it. I gave it a thorough cleaning and lubricating job then I went to Fidgets sticky on adjusting the shutter curtains. That I believe was where my biggest problem was. I got the Fed2 back togeather, ran through all the speeds and "MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE".😀 That bad boy is smoooth😎 & that CLAP of the shutter...I don't know how to express it no other way.Just sweeeet... To HELL with a quiet shutter, brother give me that CLAP.... Ya know what I mean. I'm ready to load a roll right now and go out and shoot. But it's getting late and I gotta go to work tomorrow so it's off to bed.

Highly satisfied
Greg

I know what you mean about that shutter sound ... no other camera I have makes a sound like it ... beautiful! 🙂

I think my Fed 2 is still my favourite camera! 😱 😛

Good for you, Greg. The only problem is that you've just expanded the boundries of future GAS attacks. From now on, when you spot something that obviously "needs a little work," you won't be afraid to go ahead and hit that BIN button. "Hey, I can handle that." The Slippery Slope increases it's slipperosity at the kitchen table. 🙄 Congrats!! Enjoy the FED!

I'll second that, you're sunk mate!! Enjoy...

I've had my Fed2 for 40+years, i'e' since new, its still one of my favourites. and has never let me down.
However 5 - 10 years ago, if any of us had expressed these feelings of respect and affection shown on this and other sites about the Fed2, we would have probably been locked up or at least laughed at. It must be like a fine wine or whisky, and improves with age!!!!!

Yes John - but 5-10 years ago we still had some of our self-respect and brain cells! 🙁

Cheers, Ian

Congratulations Greg! It's a great feeling hearing that shutter fire crisply after it all goes back together. I agree with Reagan... you have now opened yourself up to the world of parts cameras & fixer-uppers. Enjoy!

when you say you "gave it a thorough lubricating" - where exactly did you lubricate it? My fed 2 is lying around without its top cover (I want to clean it a bit and then do a paint job) Are there some spots where I can just drop a few drops of oil? to make it somewhat smoother without having to take it further apart?

Hi Lubitel: I oiled all the moving parts like the speed selecter knob, film advance and really anything that looks like it might move; very lightly. The main parts I oiled was inside the camera. With the lens off and the back off I turned the camera upside down. All the mesh of gears at the film sproket shaft and at the shutter curtains and the knob to cock the shutter. I lubed those and made sure not to over do it to get any oil on the curtains itself Then on the bottom of the camera opposite side of the two tension screws there is a cover that I took off and lubed that gear.(Thats the bottom gear of the film sproket shaft) My cover is different from the one in Fidgets sticky. His shows a big square box and mine is a round plate held on by one screw. I probably oiled some things that didn't need it. I oiled the shutter at the bottom where the pin moves that bar that trips the curtains. I'm probably not helping out to much, sorry.😕 Then I followed Fidgets sticky and adjusted the curtains. This I believe is where my main problem was. I probably should owe Fidget some film or something. Thanks Fidget.😀 All I can tell you is clean it good and oil/grease it, do adj. on curtains if need to and see what happens. Who knows you may get lucky like me. Then there are poobably some that will read this and say...THAT BIG DUMMY did it all wrong! and they may be right, but right now I'm pleased with the results.!

Aw, blushes 🙂
I wrote it to return something to our little community. I'm really pleased that you got something from it. But, if you want, you could give the sticky a little bump by adding to the thread that you had success. You'd be the first (only??).

Regards, Dave...😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

well I put some oil here and there in my fed 2 and it did feel to be working really smooth, but when I put the film in it and started shooting, I noticed that the advancing of film is... not smooth at all. as if something is in the way. It also makes a funky sound. has anyone had this?

@ Lubitel,

Two or more problems may cause 'stiff' winding.

The rewind knob turns then you advance the film, when it is stiff it prevents the film from proper transport. The film pressure plate could be pressing too firm against the film. (I've had this with a deformed Zorki)

The transport is done by the transport gear which takes the perforation. The take up spool is there to take up the film, if it is too tight it will pull the film quite hard which results in a stiff winding as well. (the take up spool should turn in both directions with a little resistance)

Just finish your roll and see how it rewinds and comes out. 🙂

Check that the rewind knob isn't fouling the camera top plate , Their is very little clearance and if the rewind knob has taken a knock it is very easily bent . I had this with my FED2 pre series resulting in torn sprocket holes .
