Just found this very nice Leica advert on Facebook

A bit clichéd, that old people photograph with a film Leica and young people with a digital one. I would have liked it better if the father had a digital Leica and the daughter a film Leica. That would be funny in a way.

Erik.

Of course the aged character is wearing a long, white beard, and speaks with a cavernous voice, so that we understand well that his remaining left days are few. He's the only guy whom I know who wildly opens up frames with a pair of pliers, by the way !

Erik : at 1:17 we can see both the film and digital Leicas rattling in the daughter's car. So, the daughter still uses the M4-2 her (now dead) father passed onto her. But if we didn't see the daughter using old Leica M lenses mounted on the SL with an adapter, what would this ad be all about ? ;)

"If they tell you that photographs don't do things justice, I expect you to be too busy to listen". Not bad, as for a saying.

Yeah. Another good one from the video is "Use this not to capture and log every moment of every day, but as a window through which to frame a handful of moments forever".

I find this a very touching video — It brought tears to my eyes. Maybe because I’m getting old and have a white beard too, and I have children who will continue after me, and I’m the one who has documented our lives together in photographs that have meaning for me, and for them as well, I hope. Guess I’m just a romantic at heart.

I think the Leica ad is similar to Patek Philippe's "Generations" ad campaign:
https://www.patek.com/en/company/news/generations-campaign
But perhaps I am not their target audience, because for me, there's a disconnect between the desire to capture something of life's precious moments before they're gone, and the purchase of a costly luxury product.

At least the message of Hasselblad ad is more straightforward: That the viewer as personified by the actor has acquired sensibilities which combine the best of the old and new

No matter how many Leicas or Hasselblads I buy, I'll never be as cool as the blocks in these ads. The cameras themselves look way less cool in my hands than in theirs. There must be something wrong with me.

What else Leica Camera AG could show you. Earlier they pushed their idiotic concept of taking regular camera, giving it some odd colors and calling it something stupid.
They did it with digital M and called it as "reporter". People told Leica Camara AG to go to Coventry in the comments.

Could Leica Camera AG show you some sport related advert? Young users?

Gauging and Greed is Leica Camera AG real motto. Ridiculous prices of spare batteries made in China. Even Instax camera is priced out of wack.

On the flipside, all other camera manufacturers now make only plastic disposable whitegoods.. A leica MA or MP will still last 50+ years under hard use.

I'm happy to pay more to keep that around.

50+ years of hard use? :) Do you own Ilford or Ilford owns to you?

In real world hard use means CLA and parts. For CLA we have old and older techs, plus few odds here and where with year or so of waiting time. You could also send it to Wetzlar. How practical is this in term of heavy use.
Parts... Leica runs out them and no third party replacement.

I'm much more confident in Nikon F2 to over-last MA and MP.

"Keep around to be happy" is very right wording. Just like Porche.

For "Uber Eats driving" I have Canon 500D. Purchased in 2009. 200K + exposures taken and still on original battery.
And plastic EOS 200, circa 1998. 200 USD new with lens. Was everywhere with me, my wife used it and now our daughter took it. Zero service and parts needed for it. I purchased rechargeable batteries for it couple of years ago. For few dollars, charger included.

For posing I have same camera as in advert. Made less than 50+ years ago was in regular use, needed parts and service and still needed more parts and service.

Or a Leica III from 1933. These last forever.

I agree. After owning several M and couple of LTM, I have 50+ trust for regular use in IIIc. IIf I had was build better than any M. Barnacks are less complicated for DIY CLA. Which is the only viable survival method to next 50+ years.

In recent months I'm enjoying IIIc in regular use, M4-2 has single roll for months in it and for sale F2 is no bites on FB market. :)

Bodo (ex ELC) sold all of his pre-war Leicas and told what IIf is the only camera worth to keep. It was IIf which I purchased from good person (ex_RFF) in USA and sold it locally and then Bodo took possession of it. Someone still has and using it after Bodo left this planet... He was repairing Leicas RFs for decades...

I wonder what lens this video was shot with. It seems to be anamorphic judging by the out of focus areas, and is loaded with character. Maybe they shot the whole thing wide open...

Personally I prefer the early series I, II, III and IIIa to the IIc, IIIc and IIf and IIIf. The construction of the early cameras is much stronger. It's a lot more work to open them up, but it's worth it. In addition, the cameras of the c and f series leak light much more often. Another plus of the early series is that they are available in black.

The only part from the early series that needs replacing is the rangefinder mirror, but luckily Nobbysparrow has them in stock.
