Hi everyone...

I am having one of those lucky days! I stopped off at a local flea market and picked up a Bogen 3001 Pro tripod with ball head for $10... Pretty good I thought and then spied a Lowepro Micro Trekker 200 pack that the lady only wanted $2 for!!! Now I can retire my near-useless lightweight SLIK tripod and comfortably carry my RF + Rollei gear in style! ... Don't you love it when you can't afford an upgrade, but one falls in your lap!

My only problem is that the ball head attached to the tripod has a quick release mechanism that I'll need to get an attachment plate/s for... I am assuming the head is Bogen as well, but the only distinguishing marks are 'mod 108' ... Is anyone familiar with this model and know where I can get a quick release plate from? I have attached pictures in the hope that they might help...

Thanks!

Peter

I think that is a common plate. Is there a camera store (of any kind) near you. Usually these stores stock popular mounting plates, and since digital cameras use tripods as well, most camera stores are still fairly well stocked on tripods and accessories. The mounting plate is fairly inexpensive.

Damn! What a deal. Someone at the flea market has to have the camera(s) that went with all that equipment. Maybe one of those dealers is sitting on a Leica.

I don't want to suggest anything untoward, but my local (Raleigh) flea market had a dealer selling a big bag of high-end cameras cheap the last time I was there with Captain Slack. I won't say they were stolen - let's say they were most likely a trifle warm. I passed, but to each their own.

If I buy from an individual I always get a signed receipt showing the seller's name, address and serial number of the equipment. I always ask the seller to show me how to operate the equipment and why he's selling the equipment. If too many red flags come up during the discussion I back out of the deal. It's possible that the dealer in Raleigh bought all the cameras cheap at an auction and didn't bother to research what he had.

There's a million ways to get cheap gear, some honest some less so. Hopefully yours is clean!

About 5 years ago, while I was studying in Vienna, after class I stopped by an antique/book shop I often went to near the university. Over time I had collected some cool stuff from them, but nothing really other than books and national geographics, as well as a pipe or two. Well, what did I see sitting next to their big shelf of National Geographics? A gitzo tripod with a manfrotto head. I only had about $25 to last me for the weekend, so I asked him if he'd take $15, and he said sure, he wasn't in the tripod business.

A few months later I saw the same tripod in our former great camera store Cameraworld here in Portland (it sucks now that it was bought out by Ritz) for $450.
I thought it was a pretty sweet deal as well.
