Shooting with this camera is awkward. The optical VF with digital overlay is great, however, for MF or macro you have to switch to TTL EVF. Weird. Not natural compared to what I'm used to.
EVF focusing seems slow as the lens focus "throw" is just extremely long. Pre-focusing in AF then switching to MF and making minor corrections is indeed the method to utilize.
IQ is ok, but accuracy with MF via EVF is hit and miss. Other than that i like the camera.
For it's small size and jam-packed features I can't complain. People with negative reviews expect way too much. No sense comparing the X100 to a M9/M8 or RD1. It's in a class of its own.
With full AF and OVF, it's faster and the central "RF patch" square focus and recompose is familiar. Still needs getting used to.
Macro AF is slow and not always accurate. HD (720) macro AF video is great, though.

it takes nice photos, but your impressions are basically the same as mine.
some people (i have been asked/told) seem to think that if it has a 12Mp CMOS sensor it will have DSLR image quality. the image quality if FAR superior to point and shoots, but it falls far short of my D700. compared to the D300s, the images are flatter and not as crisp, but I can't shoot my D300s at ISO3200 and get something useable, so it's a trade off.

Thanks for the info... Must say I'm still on the fence at the moment...

I would not have expected it to give the same IQ as a D700 but would have expected similar IQ to current aps-c DSLRs with similar MP count. Seems from most comments it is doing just that.
