…small 75, like the cv, or stay true to canon kit and get the 85/2?

looking ahead to getting a short telephoto…thinking that my rf kit will be just the canon 7 body with the 35/2.8 and ?.

i like the idea of the small, light and sharp cv 75/2.5…i've had several over the years and i know it's an excellent lens and certainly good for my purposes.

but i like the idea of 'staying true' to the canon kit and i have had a canon 85/2 lens before and it was certainly good enough for me. it is bigger and heavier too!!

what would you do?

I would get the CV 75, for the reasons you state. I had that lens once upon a time, and learned that the 75 focal length is not for me. But that wasn't the fault of the lens, and if YOU like 75, that's the lens to go with. The 7 has 85 frame lines, right? Should be close enough.

I think the perfect lens for the 7 is a fast 50, like the first Nokton 50/1.5 or the Canon 50/1.5. But you didn't ask abt 50s...

Canon 85/2 is a friggin monster. Good lens, though 1.9 and of course the 1.8 better.

But the cv 75/2.5 is very small and very light and very sharp 🙂 I have canon 1.5, 1.9 and 1.8

Most used? cv 75/2.5 outdoors, and canon 85/1.5 indoors.

Asked myself the same question yesterday: I am preparing for a longer trip through southern Africa and had to choose one of the two for the trip. I opted for the much heavier Canon: Whilst the CV 75 is perfect for my purposes I simply love what I sometimes get with / from the Canon. Plus I started using 50s as my regular focal length and the CV is too close to those as well.
Hope this makes sense.

Funny that you don't mention the signature of these choices.

Although that CV is a modern lens, it has one of the most classical signatures in the CV lineup. Excellent for portraits wide open, sharpens up very nicely across the frame for city landscape. Fits your style best.

If f/2.8 is your fastest aperture on the wider end, I don't see the point of a faster tele.

"Stayin true" to Canon would only make sense if: a) that is part of the image you want to project (perhaps making interactions with people better for your photography); b) you are choosing subject matter or thematic content that has a link to that era.

That CV is one of those lenses I had and really miss. I love 75s, they are the people lens.

The 75/2.5 is one of the best lenses for people shots you can find around, In fact, I have a rf version and a Minolta version, and am looking to swap it for the Nikon one, because I prefer using Nikon bodies for generic shooting. It is also quite unique, because of such compact size.

The Heliar is a great lens, Joe, but it would bug me that the frame-lines on your 7 are so different. There are some great 100/105mm classic portrait lenses, the Canon 100/3.5 or the Nikkor 105/2.5 (would be my favorite on your camera) are superb.

it's not for a lack of good glass that i ask…i'm wondering about staying with canon to keep it in the family or going with something smaller and non canon.

I just love the Nikkor Sonnar, Joe. And - while the chrome version is quite heavy - it is much smaller than either Canon 85/2 or 1.9. And it will fit the contrast/rendering of your 35/2.8. Attached a quick&dirty iphone photo for size comparison Nikkor vs. Heliar.

Heh heh, if we're opening up the floor to consider the Nikkor 85/2 Sonnar, than I would definitely second Roland on that one. In fact, it's exactly what I did. The chrome version looks fabulous, too, much better than my black version.
