I wonder if you go to woodworker’s forum, do they have member’s signatures like “Makita drill with carbide blades, Ryobi joiner, Delta hand saw (handle recovered with real leather). Looking for nice used planer, trade is possible”. And topics like “Let’s see pictures of your mallets” and “Should I buy a set of hand chisels with wooden inlay handles or opt for cheaper one’s and get the additional screwdriver instead?”

Well, it does get a bit much on these forums from time to time. However, my Dad was a foreman in a machine shop and on his days off he would get together with other guys and talk "shop" endlessly. Talking about the nuts and bolts of, well, nuts and bolts and putting them together, using a drill press and a lathe and on and on...If there were ladies present they would finally say, "OK boys, no more talking shop today." Not that it did any good.

If someone is passionate enough about an activity (hobby or job, etc.),
then I'm sure talking about it and it's inner workings and details with other like-minded individuals will be just the same as what goes on here at RFF (and other photo sites).
Select an interest, there will be a "group" for it.

Go to forums for musicians... it's very similar to photography.

Whenever you have a field with a technical element, men, and a place to chew the fat - there you will find this insanity. It's the grown-up equivalent of Top Trumps.

With luck, "being cool" is ceasing to be cool. It's a phase that should have died out years ago, say 5 minutes after some egotist dreamed it up.
Now, on to important things: do you guys prefer Philips screws to slot screws?

Interesting question! IMO, our gear talks reach a bit too often the point that we forget that cameras are meant to take photos with, but that's nothing compared to what I remembered from Land Rover forums. There you have lots of people who discuss in details their disassembling, modifying, reinforcing or just customizing 4x4 toys that cost WAY more than our rangefinders, just for the pleasure of getting their hands dirty and getting to know their vehicle. And that vehicle in many cases never leaves asphalt... We aren't too bad all in all.
