Just wanted to share this.

Stephanie: Either crop [again] from the top and make the image square to better balance the colors, or crop less from the bottom. The colors are nice. Keep on experimenting ... definitely.

Frank: I spent years on sunsets and then only backed off.

Eh, it was my first roll. I wanted something I knew I could nail before I started working with other subjects.

I figured out what film I took this on as well. It was Elite Chrome 400. Now that I know, I may get some more.

Also note that this isn't a sunset. This is a sunrise. 😉

Sorry to hear that... what's the old saying: red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in morning, sailors take warning. Aren't you glad to be on the Plains??

Actually, no. As much as I love corn and soy products, the fields they grow on really don't lend themselves to photography as much as I'd like. 😉

I must be getting old and cranky. I've of the "the last thing this world needs is more sunset photos" mindset. Sorry, Steph.

I know what you mean FrankS, but I still love taking 'em. Sunsets, sunrise the odd eclipse thrown in for good measure. To me they sum up the fact that no moment in time is ever the same, even though sunsets and sunrises happen every day, each one is different, not only in the event but in the observation of it.

I love em and never tire of them.....but then I also like shots of solitary trees....😱

A sunrise is what gets me up in the morning. A sunset tells me it's time to unwind (at least when I'm off work). I love them and will continue to take photos of them because of it. Not being the religious type at all, watching these two things is as close as I can get to a spiritual experience.

Oh, I still get off on looking at sunsets (not so fond of sunrises - too early in the morning for me) but not photographng them anymore. It's jsut too easy - no challenge. All you have to do is be there on a good evening, set the camera on auto, focus to infinity, point and click. The only sunset shots I can appreciate any more is when it is used as a background for a balanced flash lit foreground subject.

And again, I"m not saying that because I'm not impressed with sunset photos, that they are inferior, I personally just don't appreciate them any more after the thousands I've seen and taken.

I like lone tree shots though.

A note: camera was not set on auto, meter was not used. I used the Canon P and J-12. If there is one thing I'm not when it comes to photography it's lazy. Thought you'd like to know.

I did this one handheld...I think the next time I do it I'm going to use slower film and my tripod. I'm also going to bring out a meter. I have found that I like slide film a lot...it makes me want to buy B&H out of what Velvia 50 they have left and pick up some Sensia 100 as well...and I probably would if I had the money. The 8 or 9 rolls of Velvia 50 that I have will have to be enough for me.

My next project with slide film is fall shots of trees, and also a redo of the sun on the water shot of mine in color (and possibly with a wider lens so I can get more stuff in the frame).

Oh, and thanks for all the suggestions for mailers. I'm going with the Fuji mailers because of their cost and also because, in spite of their slow turnaround, they do pretty good work I've heard.

Stephanie, I like the shot, nice colors. I prefer the cropped version as well. You might consider giving Elite Chrome 100 a try, I think you might like it. I've used it with excellent results for fall color. I'm a bit biased though, because I don't really care for Fuji color films all that much.

Nice sunset, Stephanie. I prefer the cropped version ... less dead space (though projected there might be detail there that's lost in the scan).
I'd say forget the light meter ... wing it and bracket a few frames and you'll probably get great results.

I'm actually biased TOWARD Fuji, but this seems to be a really good film. I plan to try out both the 100 and the 200 eventually.
